2000 Bounder Speedometer quit

Hi Folks,

I spent today doing various chores on the Bounder and as I was driving back to the storage lot the speedometer suddenly quit, which of course also disabled the cruise control, odometer, and trip gauge. I'm hoping the module is electronic and the problem is a blown fuse (but why did the fuse blow?), as I'm not too keen on routing a mechanical speedometer cable through the firewall and stuff.

I probably won't be able to get back to it for a couple of days, but I'd really appreciate opinions about the problem and solutions, please.

Best Regards,
Frank

Most likely VSS. Or wiring.. maybe try good OBD2 scanner with live data record will show it.. if you don't have one check with a/p store and they will rent one for free possibility.. you really should have your own scanner at this point anyway.. only 30 bucks part.. and easy to change..
Good luck and keep us posted

Skip - I was accompanying my wife as she was browsing an arts & crafts store, and I noticed the "handmade product" caveat on a piece of pottery. I thought at the time that such statement was a brilliant piece of marketing to cover what might otherwise be considered a defect, and it was a short jump from that sentiment to composing my .sig statement below.

The Bounder is built on a 1999 Ford F10 chassis, as I recall without research among the papers.

Donr103 - I have an OBD scanner but did not think until reading your message to have it ask the Bounder how it is feeling. Sort of like R2-D2 talking to the Death Star. Thank you for the reminder!

Best Regards,
Frank

I believe that Ford takes it's speedo reading from a sensor on top of the rear differential .
Might be a good spot to check wiring for rodent damage ; fresh out of storage and all .

Critters love tasty wires and rubber hoses and lines on rv and eat the tiniest holes that will leak.. or short things out.. including behind the dash.. so when things go haywire and don't make sense keep critters in the back of your mind all the time.. next.. if you think vss. Is bad.. hold on.. just don't get one.. pull the old one.. and clean it.. see if a lot of junk is on it.. look for chucks.. if you never have changed diff oil.. it is most likely past due.. many time one can do fresh diff oil change and clean vss.. and back in business.. use lots of pen oil on vss clamp and bolt.
Good luck and keep us posted
