2005 Revolution LE - Hot water heater bypass
In the process of winterizing - while trying to run antifreeze thru the water pump and into the faucets, I have found that no matter how I have the bypass and drain valves positioned, my hot water tank fills up with antifreeze.
Pic posted of my hot water heater and (what i believe to be) the bypass and drain valves. Bypass
What am I missing here? I am assuming this is just me being dumb and missing something.
Thanks!

Hi FunCrzd,
Your photo is identical to my 03 Rev. The upper valve is the bypass and the lower is the drain.
The bypass valve is set in the correct direction to not fill the water heater. It appears the nut on the lever is tight and not slipping.
How much resistance do you feel when you rotate the valve? It could be possible the valve stem is broken internally. Just a guess.

My 07 has another valve way back in there toward the rear bottom of tank.

I thought so too...Feels like there is some resistance, but not a whole bunch. Guess I hadn't considered that the valve could be broken! Odd part is that the tank fills when the valve is in this position. Almost wondering if there is some "custom" plumbing that went on.
Directly above the bypass valve in the picture, there is a T with a hose that runs to the upper fitting that goes into the water heater.

Our coach did the same thing couple years ago. Found a bad check valve on the outlet port of the hot water tank. The check valve was leaking letting water backfill the tank from the outlet line.

THIS^^^^^^
Hot Outlet has a check valve in 'nipple' screwed into tank
If is suppose to stop backflow into WH Tank when in BYPASS
Check valve bad (stuck open, O-ring dislodged etc)
*Provided Cold Inlet valve is closed

Well now I feel better. I have been staring at the plumbing wonder how in the heck water wouldn't fill up the tank. Next stop - check valve.
Thanks!

I suspect the same thing mine did the same thing. I tok my bypass valve off to test and it was fine i suspected a check valve or bleeding back through a faucet somewhere. anyway ran antifreeze through then low pressure air to push out any remaining.

Update - appears to have been the check ball valve on the water heater itself (or lack there of). Instead of replacing the valve, I just removed the hose to the valve and capped the t-fitting that fed the valve. Everything worked as it should.
Just a possibility on the lack of a valve - I replaced the water heater this past spring and the bypass worked the previous winter, so I am wondering if the new water heater (and new valve/fitting) are not of the one way variety. Some have pointed out in this and other threads having 3 valves in their bypass plumbing.

Cut the line coming out of water heater and put in a shut-off valve. That's what l did.
