2017 Pace Arrow retarder brake

When I put on the retarder switch brake, I feel there is no braking assist at all. Switch on, gas pedal pressed or not, there is nothing telling me it is helping. I've forgot to switch it off and only knew because I looked at the switch or wanted to use it and saw that it was still on. Should it be down shifting? I've started manually down shifting at the top of a hill but I thought the retarder brake would noticeably take effect??

When I turn mine on and lift off the throttle the transmission pad shows 2 and then whatever gear it is actually in. It does not work with cruise control on so you need to turn off CC

I had mine changed so it only comes on once I tap the break or push cancel on the cruise control that way I can coast if I desire. Couldn’t stand how it started down shifting as soon as took my foot off the throttle.
As Mike058 said you should see the trans gear selector go to 2nd once retarder is activated and trans will start downshifting. There is also a light on the dash of my Discovery when the retarder is operating.

I agree with others, our 17 Pace Arrow gives an indicator on the dash as well as the 2 on the transmission and begins slowing and downshifting right away. Stays on till your at 20 mph or so. But it won’t work with the cruise on or if you are overreving the engine. Downhill speed of 60 or less is needed for it to be effective.

Is the Pace Arrow a gas or DP rig?
What engine/trans?

Even though the shift pad shows a '2', that may not be the actual gear at the moment (it is the target gear, but not actual). At 60 mph you are still in 6th gear and no exhaust brake has much effect, but give it some help with the brake pedal (service brakes) to get speed down and the tranny will start downshifting toward 2 and you will feel more & more retarding as the gears drop.
