I haven't heard of any fix. The batteries do seem to go dead faster than car FOBs, but they seem to last at least a season and that's when we replace the batteries any way. The extra buttons only work if those components have been installed. You would be able to see the wires to the compartment doors if you had the locks that unlock with the FOB. Otherwise, it's just the cabin door and the push button start.
Don't lose one of these suckers. Freightliner wants $750 a pop for a replacement FOB. Get yourself some Apple tags or something equivalent to add to your key ring so you can find them again if you lose one. My wife lost hers (how I know what the replacement cost is). I found it, just before I ordered a new one, hiding under the theater seats in our rig. We added the Apple tags. Not much later, she lost her key again, and with the tag attached to her key chain we were able to locate it next to the fire ring at the campground we had left the day before. We were able to guide a very understanding campground staff to the exact location and make it beep so they could locate it, and they shipped them back to us. $30 per tag is well worth it.
