2021 pinion seal leak

One thing you might consider when they have the pumpkin out is to change the ring and pinion ratio. Poor man's overdrive.

I lost a pinion bearing coming into Denver one time with our old '07 Jayco Seneca 33s. Was referred to a great shop in Aurora just off east Colfax. I asked about changing to a lower ratio and was told that the cost would be minimal since they were going to be in there anyway. Once done our speedo was 10% slow at 60MPH and milage was improved. That old Duramax LBZ didn't know the difference.

There are not removing the differential, they are just replacing the pinion seal.
Driveshaft, pinion nut, flange, seal.

If that's all that is required, seems like an easy DIY to me.

Sure, to me to, but it's not my RV and it should be covered by Ford..

You will need more then a few hand tools and a 900 ft lbs torque wrench though.

Well it’s a no go. The local Ford dealer took my rig in to his shop and then called me in a couple of hours to report they would not do the pinion seal repair. Apparently after looking at it they bailed. Too big a job for us.hmmmm
Well it’s back in my driveway and the search will go on. Guess I call a few more dealers to see what they say.What a hassle.

You might try looking for a truck shop, rather than a Ford dealership - Ford might even agree to cover the work under warranty if it's the only option.



Don't know where you're located, but we had great service at Transwest Truck in Grand Junction, CO a few years ago when the rear end on our Workhorse Bounder took a dump - they got us back on the road in about 3 weeks.

Alan, Bassdoc is in New York, so recommending Colorado shops seems like a long way to go for service, and I could send him to 2 good ones in Denver and C/S.
FYI, I just watched the Youtube videos for pinion seal replacement on both a Dana 60 and an 80. NEITHER have crush washers, so pulling the yoke, nut and seal takes about 15 minutes. Seal comes out easily and goes back in with light taps with a hammer. The pinion nut can be tightened with any decent 1/2" drive impact., and the torque specs are 400+#. Most guys just hammer them tight with an impact and use blue lock tight on the nut. NO BIG DEAL.
I would guess this to be a 45 minute job in the driveway, including a beer!
The video from start to finish was 34 minutes.
I wonder what it says in the Ford shop rate book????

Did the pinion seal Utube videos have parking brakes on the rear diff ? That's where they are now.

Not sure if it being located on the rear differential makes the project more complicated.

No they did not.
Never seen a parking brake at the rear of a drive shaft.
My Pace Arrow does not have one back there.

Guess I'd like to see a picture of that.

Ford moved them back around 2016 when the 6 speed came out.

I do like to do my own work however this has a few worries for me
1 Warranty invalidation
2 If I fubar it there it sits in my drive blocking everything for yet another problem solving adventure
3 Stinky gear oil on my drive my wife will skin me.
4 I Dont have an air impact and am not sure on retightening to proper specs.
5 new seal availability
6 As a typical project goes , the unknown
7 I am probably at my Hoa tolerance limit with it in my drive for 2 weeks already.

I have reached out to a Ford commercial center 30 miles away
They wanted pics of my rig to review before deciding if they would tackle this.

Hi from a fellow Iowaegen. Davenport for me.
No offence intended but I don't think that was one of Ford's best ideas.
In any case, the ebrake location just means a few more bolts, and makes it a 2 beer job.
I'll be coming back to Colorado from Davenport the 3rd week in April, and could swing down from DesMoines if you want to tackle it.
Based on where you are, isn't there a good John Deere dealer in town or close?
They usually have some pretty good mechanics that could do it, either on the clock or off. I used to know some who moonlighted spinning wrenches on the weekends.

It's a great idea. This way if the driveshaft falls out and takes out the brake lines, you still have a parking brake.
