'93 Bounder Throttle
Hi, all,
I'm in the process of replacing the throttle cable on our new (to us) '93 Bounder with a diesel pusher. The accellerator was sticky, such that you had to pull the pedal up to allow the engine to go back to idle. Just before disconnecting the cable from the throttle, I noticed that at the engine the throttle would not close on its own, while after the cable was detached the throttle would close readily. After detaching the cable, I could push-pull the cable by hand only if it was fairly straight - put any bend in it and I couldn't push-pull anymore. I found Cablecraft that makes teflon-lined cables, with assemblers all over the country. The closest one to me is Hydrodyne in Waco, so that's where I'm headed later today.
I noticed there are 3 different cables that attach to the throttle on the engine. One of course is the throttle. One, attached with a chain, is the cruise control.
What the heck is the third one? It has a slide fitting on it, so that the throttle can open further, like it's intended to set a minimum throttle opening.

If you track the cable in question, it will either , attach to the transmission, or a control box containing a TPS, (Throttle Position Sensor), for trans shift control.
Your mechanical Cummins , didn't have a TPS, so one had to be added for the Allison operation.

Thanks! When I crawl underneath to install the new throttle cable, I'll check that. There was a push-pull cable coming from the front alongside the throttle cable, not sure if that was the third one or not. I'll report back when I know.

I picked up the new throttle cable this morning. They commented it was the longest cable they'd ever made, at 35 feet.
$225. Not too bad I guess. I'm thinking what with having a teflon jacket and cable liner it's probably better than original.
I've gotta find a better solution for the driver-end clevis pin attachment. It had a push-on fastener that gets destroyed in the process of removing. I'm hoping I can find a pin with a hole for a cotter pin, or a shoulder bolt. The current pin has a groove to accept a snap ring or e-clip, but considering the space constraints that also would be very difficult to get on or off.

I got the new cable installed, and... it didn't fix the problem. I'm guessing the spring inside the fuel injector is weakened or broken. So, I added an external spring to finish the job. There was a small, very weak spring on the throttle quadrant, which I removed. The other end of that spring mounted to a bracket which got in the way of the new spring. Said bracket was held on with two 1/4" bolts, one of which is the clamp for the transmission throttle sensor cable. I removed the lower bolt and loosened the sensor cable bolt, and pivoted the bracket up out of the way, and retightened the cable bolt. I then drilled a 1/4" hole in the square tube that provides the location for the coach body to sit on the frame, and used that hole plus the removed bolt to bolt on an electrical-conduit p-clamp bracket, with a hole drilled on the end of the bracket to accept one end of the spring, with the other end going in the hole in the quadrant where the original spring was mounted. The new spring was an off-the-shelf item from Home Depot. This provided enough force to close the throttle. It's a little difficult to press the gas pedal, but manageable. I figure if it gets to be too tiresome I'll replace the whole throttle cable with a hydraulic control.
I'll post photos when I get a chance to take some.
The driver end clevis: I was able to order a 3/16 x 1/2" long clevis pin drilled for a cotter pin from a local bolt supply. Until that comes in I drilled a hole in the original pin and used a cotter pin to fasten.

Here's a couple photos of the spring modification.
The first photo shows the conduit P-clamp bolted to the coach frame, with the spring attached to a hold drilled in the P-clamp.
Second photo shows the spring attached to the original spring mount on the throttle quadrant. The cable for the throttle position sensor for the transmission is in front of the spring, so it's not very visible.
Sorry for the poor quality of photos, iPhone doesn't like getting crammed down into tight spaces.

At least you had enough room to get your hand in while holding the I phone, or a wrench for that matter.
Considering the space available , manufacturers do a remarkable job of making servicing difficult to impossible.

Actually I've been fairly impressed with how much work space there is down there. Maybe the earlier rigs like mine didn't use the space as efficiently.
The only real complaint I've had is the mere 27degrees of lift on the bed platform, which made getting access to the under-bed-doghouse rather difficult, but I'm fixing that.

Well, so much for trying to link to the specific message. Search for "mckinley" in the thread. (sigh)
