Another step grinding question

I just replaced the step motor due to the grinding of the plastic gear. After replacement it worked great the first dozen times I opened and closed the door. Now it is grinding and not fully extending. The grinding now occurs at the end of the opening cycle. The sound is different than before. The sound is much more metallic and louder. Everything bolted right back in place. All the connections were plugged back in. What did I miss?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Gear box is stripped. When you remove the motor, inspect the large gear drive inside the box for worn or missing teeth. The whole design is fragile. Won't stand up to anything preventing extension or retraction. Wait for it to extend fully before you step on the steps. Watch for curbs the steps will hit when you park. Don't put rugs on the steps, will jam up retraction. Even after all this care still have to replace some part every two years. Good luck.

When you have the motor & gear box off, operate the steps by hand and be sure they fully extend and retract with no moving resistance. If they donít operate that easily, work on them until they do before putting on another gear box.

Bsqrd,
Thanks. That may explain the metallic sound. I will pull it all apart this time. It did not hit or bind on anything I could see. Is there anything else that could cause it to keep trying to extend? I had the same type steps on my previous 2001 Bounder. Never had any issues whatsoever with them. They were run into curbs and other obstacles a number of times. They simply stopped.

I will do that when I take this apart again.
Thanks!

Steps must be lubrication often. Use silicone spray.

Just replaced mine. So far it is ok. Plastic gear was flattened on one side.

Works great now!!!

Thanks everyone for the input. Replaced the gearbox and cleaned all the pivot points. Silicone applied and it works great now. Much faster movement. I changed out the nylon gear on the motor and will flip the metal gear in the gearbox to use as a back up.

Where did you get the nylon replacement gear?

Amazon source for rebuild kit

Replacement gear here:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Hope this helps. There were several options to choose from. I opened my motor first to determine which replacement parts were needed.
