Atwood water heater

I have a 09' Bounder 38P. The water heater works fine on electric. How ever on gas it runs for a while and quits. The red light comes on. If you wait for a while and restart it starts again. Looks like its overheating, I think. Any idea how to correct?

Sounds like the electrode is out of alignment with the flame, check the alignment and see if the flame is moving away from the electrode, or possibly a chimney/draft issue causing the flame to move.

Question: is the water REALLY HOT, like 180 degrees hot?

Take a cooking thermometer which can be interperted up to around 220 Degrees F.. Stick it in a pan of boiling water and note where the needle stops.. That should be around 205-215 depending on if you are high up or low down (Barometric pressure) and the purity of the water

Now measure the water out.. If it's over 160, you have a bad low temp sensor (The primary temp sensor) or a bad control board and the unit is going into HIGH TEMP SHUTDOWN.

Now.. I know where the high temp sensor is.. on the outside, with the RED wire hooked to it.. I think the regular (120 degree) sensor is next to it.. but the key words in this paragraph are I THINK.

And, of course.. As Leonard Nimoy used to say on the show "In Search Of" This is one possible answer, not the only possible answer and it may not be the correct answer or something like that.

So listen to what others say too.

I recall last spring.. I tuned the water heater on and it went direct to FAULT.

Yup, I had FOLLOWED directions when winterizing and removed the aforementioned RED WIRE from the sensor

How long is "a little while"? If it is 15 seconds, you have one problem. If it is minutes, then its a different problem.

A few minutes sounds like a thermostat problem (early cutoff) or maybe a circuit board problem.
