Backup Monitor Wiring 2002 Discovery

Hello all -
I am replacing the backup camera and display (original 'crt' model) on our 2002 Discovery with a new camera and display.
I am running new power and video feeds from the front to the rear camera; part of the problem with the old system was the wiring and tempermental work/no work situation. I am taking power from the front at the display, and running it to the rear camera.
My question is this: there is a sort of 'transformer' at the end of the chassis harness that also has a small fuse in it (I am attaching a photo of the transformer). Is this transformer there to drive the old-style monitor? The new flat digital monitor does not need anything per the manual besides clean 12v and video signal.
So...should I remove the transformer box, or feed off of the transformer with fuse? Or replace transformer and fuse with an in-line fuse?
Lastly...what about the ground? There is a green 'ground' wire from the transformer, but the new display does not have a ground input. The new camera is grounded to the chassis. Would it be recommended to connect the ground to the black (negative ground) terminal for the display, or just terminate the ground with no connection?
The camera and all works fine (the wires are all run), but I wasn't sure if I should remove the transformer.
Any assistance would be appreciated.

If the voltage coming out of the transformer is 12 volt, I would personally keep it. I see that there is a capacitor also. This transformer helps take out spikes and the capacitor takes out "noise". Granted, a newer the newer unit may have this built in, but it cannot hurt to keep the original in place.

Dash Monitor Voltage

Hi and thanks so much for responding.

Yes, the output is 12V from the transformer.
I have had coursework in basic electricity, and can work my way through most situations - but didn't want to do something that isn't best practice.
The concept of the transformer reducing interference is a good one (I've certainly seen video screens with 'interference')....

An excellent point. Thanks very much!

John
