Best oil for Onan generator

Hello Friends

Servicing the Onan 5500 Marquis Gold Generator and have read many of the posts on best oil to use. 30w or 15W40. The manual says for summer use 30W is Preffered but I have read many posts on using 15W40. Is there any advantage of one over the other relative to oil “sloshing” or “expansion” causing the Generator to shut down.

Thank you.

It depends on your operating temperature range, both are rated at 100F+ on the high end but Onan only rates SAE 30 down to 32F, and 15W40 down to 10F.

Onan recommends 15W40 as a year round oil for most RV's, and lists SAE 30 as the preferred summer oil due to lower oil consumption. So if you go with 15W40, check your oil level more often.
