Bounder Generator Exhaust

For the second time I almost lost my generator exhaust while travelling down the highway. In each instance one rubber strap on a universal exhaust hanger failed resulting in failures of the adjacent hangers. As I repaired my second failure last week in Phoenix, I couldn't help but wonder why the exhaust run was so long. My Onan 5K generator is under the drivers window and the exhaust terminates behind the rear duals 18 feet away and along the way making multiple bends and passing between the leaf springs and the inside dual with just a mere 2.5 inches of clearance on either side. My question is what is the purpose of this extended run, why some generators exhaust directly next to the generator, and finally has anyone removed this lengthy exhaust.

It all comes down to sound and whether or not the manufacturer wants the hot exhaust not routed next to something.

You can route it however you would like as long as you won't be damaging anything with exhaust heat.

Just make sure you terminate outside of the vehicle as to avoid any potential carbon monoxide poisoning.

In most cases routing is subjective.

Eighteen feet of little bitty pipe with a lot of bends = a lot of back pressure.
I would re route it so you only have about 2 - 3 feet of exhaust pipe.
If you are really good, you could use bigger pipe.
I did.

I agree with the with it being too long. Shorter with an Onan muffler seems like a solution. In addition to the limited clearance around the tires and leaf spring, Fleetwood routed the final bend underneath within 1-1/2 inches of a plastic basement storage cabinet.
