CAT 7.2L C7 350HP - What Oil?

I know there are a lot of threads out there about motor oil, but most are older and I'm wondering if things have changed in the last few years. I see lots of different oils used in these types of motors, but not a lot of "full synthetics".

I'm wondering which would be better:
Rotella T5 "synthetic blend"
Rotella T6 "full synthetic"

Just curious on thoughts!

Randy

My opinion and we know about opinions there is basically no difference except T6 is full synthetic and cost more.
Do you drive more than 10k miles a year?
Do you change oil annually per manufacturer?

Nope nothing changed. Oil threads are a regular occurrence and all end up repeating the same things. As someone who's been a member of sports car, and motorcycle forums, oil threads are common in all of them and they all have a lot in common.

I like to say: Asking what's the best oil is a bit like asking what's the best pizza, or the best burger. Everyone has their opinion. Besides using oil that meets the manufacturer's specs, the rest is all about what you like or prefer. If one type of oil calls to you and it meets the specs, go for it.

So when I bought our rig and not being a diesel mechanic but many years of automotive repair and a owner of a repair shop I chose to ask my oil vendor and he recommended the Valvoline full synthetic. The best advise I can give is to stay with a brand and type when you start. Here's the link to what I've been using and always get a perfect report card when I send in a sample to the lab.

CAT 7.2L C7 350HP - What Oil?

I use CAT DEO 15w40 in all my Diesel engines. That being said, I get it at dealer cost so I haven’t compared pricing with Rotella.
If CAT thought synthetic oil was better for their engines, they would sell it, which they do not.

I would start with what Cat recommends, and go from there.
