Clearcoat respray

Hello all. I wanted to get any opinion on my particular clearcoat issue. My 2001 Dream has peeling issues only on the white, and primarily on the upper parts of the white. The clearcoat peels off to the edge of the other colors easily, but, the bond on all the other colors is still intact? I have been able to pretty much use just a hose pipe to blow the clear off in sheets. The paint underneath is in seemingly good condition. My question is has anyone had the same issue, and did you have the clear resprayed on the color effected, or a full respray?

Pretty common look at 2K a 2 part clear coat in a can.

On my 1995 CC, the white part is just clear coated gel coat. No base coat paint.

It peeled off like your description. Neatly broke off adjacent to clear coat over base coat paint.

I guess it is not desirable to clear coat on gel coat due to durability. Sounds like yours lasted @20 years so not bad.

I am now aware that the clear coat forms a bond with base coat. That is why they are applied within 24 hours of each other.

Dean, that makes sense. The paint underneath is not chalky, nor does it bleed. Per Rooster's suggestion, I may go ahead and use the 2K clear over the gel coat and see if it takes. Lot of taping.......

I did the 2k rattle can application after removing all the clear coat from gel coat and prepping the surfaces.

The new clear did last for about 3 years before beginning to release.

But, I was/am no expert at spray painting much less such a large area, so perhaps you can get a better result.

3 years in the sun is pretty good for a rattle can solution

Seems to be popular with the Guitar and Motorcycle refinishing DIY folks.

That button is the activator to make the 2 part spray paint functional.

Each spray can must be used within 48 hours once activated as I recall.

1999 Fleetwood Discovery. Have had good success with wet sanding the
sections that do not look so good. Then cleaning and spraying clear coat
with a HVLP gun. Looks ok. Not the same as if the entire coach would be
sanded, primed, painted with decorations.
However, looks good for a 23 year old coach. Our baby.
Regards,
JimB

I have a HVLP gun I used for respraying an old Triumph I have. Just ordered 2 gallons of 2K clear. I'm going to strip the rest of the clear off the white areas and give it a go. Paint guy at NAPA said light sanding with #600, clean, mask and shoot it. Biggest problem I see is trying to keep orange peel down to a minimum.

The spray can 2-part clear coats are a hardening type of clearcoat same as if you mixed and sprayed your own from a gun.

I've used the following with great success.

From Eastwood: https://www.eastwood.com/ew-2k-aeros...=google&wv=3.1

From Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Spray-Refinis.../dp/B0043B7UQY

Obviously the better the prep work the better your results. But this will produce professional long lasting results. You will need a couple of coats minimum.

Good luck!

1. 2K clearcoat is a 2-part clear - clearcoat and a catalyst - that is essentially the same quality as factory clear.
2. clear de-laming and pealing is due primarily to improper prep, i.e. the fiberglass is/was not prepped correctly. There may also be an issue with clear sticking to non-painted fiberglass
