Creeping slide

I have a good friend that has a 2008 Discovery model 41'X. The slide on the curbside creaps out while enroute. He can put the slide in (flush with the exterior walls) and the slide will move out anywhere from a half inch to an inch during transit. He and I removed the slide motor and it appears to be fine. Hooked it up to 12 volts and it rotates in both directions. The brake seems to performed as it should. He contacted Power Gear and they could not provide much information. They did say a new motor was around $550. We believe since the motor functions that there is no need of replacing the motor. Perhaps it is some kind of adjustment issue. Anyone out there have had a similar problem. Would appreciate any helpful information.

There is a brake on the motor. Sometimes the brake lever moves a little and disengages. Here is a Power Gear Doc that illustrates this.

Hope this helps.

Just a suggestion. After the slide is fully in, release the button and engage it a second time. Often it takes the second effort to engage the lock, which you should be able to hear.

I had the same problem. I crawled under the slide and moved the brake lever both ways and left it in the locked position and everything is fine now.

My slide motor lock became unlocked and the side crept out a little while driving. I have had this happen before & know how to lock it.
Question is, how does the lock disengage and what would cause it to become unlocked?
Have not found an answer here.

It is an electric engagement and disengagement. When power is supplied to the slide motor the brake releases and when the power button is released , the brake engages. Brake engaged is the default position, if the brake is engaged, you should not be able to turn the motor. I had a similar problem and the cast aluminum housing had cracked on the back of the motor and would flex when the brake engaged, thus not holding the slide stationary. Power gear will not sell the brake housing , only the entire motor , brake, gear box assembly.

About the Brake

They do wear out.

I had to replace mine. Since you've already taken the motor/brake assembley out you can probably do it yourself. Much cheaper that way.

There are posts all over the net on how to replace just the brake assembley but I could not find the parts to do it so I ended up with a whole new assembley.

As far as I know , slideout motor brakes cannot be replaced. The whole motor including brake must be replaced. Jack motors are a different story. You can get brake kits for them.

Thanks all for the info. I did not take the motor out. I can crawl under the coach and see the motor and turn the brake to engage. If it continues to stay unlocked I will replace the motor. Seems like an easy job.

Thanks for the update. Good luck with the motor.
