Dear Onan Engineer

The placement of the oil filter is cruel and unusual punishment for your clients, you should be fired.. not sure how hard it would have been to put a vertical filter relocation kit right next to the oil plug for $3 more.

They use that $3 to feed the gorilla that tightens the filter and drain plug at the factory.

You don't hate gorillas do you?

ugh I ripped the top half of the oil plug off trying to get it off.. seriously do they use a impact wrench on that thing.. as for the oil filter.. I mean really does it need to be that tight, the hold trusty punch a screwdriver through the filter worked like a champ.

They have my onan 7000 gas packed into a compartment with about an inch above it. If you wanted to change the spark plugs, you would have to remove it from the coach.

That's not the fault of an Onan Engineer. That be the Motor Coach Engineer...they must have been schooled at the same College of Lame Engineering. One of their classmates stuffed the Onan 5500 in our Damon in a compartment that gives one only about 6 inches of vertical access to the front cover. I can barely get the cover off to check the oil.

My drain plug was so tight, I had to use a 1/2 ratchet just to get enough leverage to crack the nut. For the filter, the use of a strap wrench makes this a very easy task.

Now I just need to find a 2 ft. extension to remove the soot filter bolt.

Mine went without much incident, including the soot bolt and surprisingly, there was hardly any soot in there. Could be it was serviced last year as promised, when I got it, but never rely on that and just assume, I was the first in the last 10yrs.

I have a little valve that drains the oil on my onan. Simply turn the little valve and the oil drains also the filter is accessible through a hole in the bottom of the gen pan. Pit a filter socket on and it comes right off, no fuss no muss. Can change the oil in 10 minutes with only two tools
