Dust infiltration in the rear closet

The 39r has a closet at the rear with inside storage on either side. Wife put too many clothes (winter storage) on the rod and it broke. When I finally got around to fixing it, I noticed much of the clothing was covered in silt.

Long time coming, I cleaned out the closet and added a wire shelf at the top, just enough room for hats. Now I had to find where the silt came from. I removed the access panel at the bottom left (looking to the rear, on your right side) and could see light. This box is where the air intake enters before getting to the air filter; also the outlet for the engine block heater is in here; also the taillights wire through here.

The rear wall is about a half inch from touching the bottom. The wall looks as proper above the second shelf. I haven't investigated the other side, yet. It fits perfectly to the panel at the rear of the closet.

First thought was fill it with foam and tape it to ensure a perfect seal. Could this be a sign of larger problems? Or, just poor workmanship 18 years ago?

Just a followup: Over time and with vibration, the original sealant gave out.

I removed the leftover sealant with a 5in1 knife. Used a fiber brush attached to my drill motor and cleaned the cracks out. My brother is an aircraft mechanic and had an ample supply of expired fuel tank sealant. Hard to mix, but, it's done. The tubes of sealant fit in a caulking gun. Time consuming. Solid fix.

You will need to rotate the photos right. These photos are indicative of the entire Connection of the rear wall.

Thanks. I'll look at mine the next time my wife takes her shoes from that closet to the house!
