Welcome to the forum. They operate on 12 volt power so he's correct.

Store them extended or bring a step ladder.

Our steps in our 2012 Tioga did the same thing.

I keep a small step just inside the door when the power is off in the coach. I just grab it and put it on the ground when i want to get in and put it back inside the door when i'm done.

I carry a HARBOR FREIGHT steping stool Step Stool/Working Platform

I place the stool just inside the door of the RV so I can open the RV and use the stool when I have the batteries turned off.

Should be easy to lock the steps to the out position like you do when camping.

The steps are supposed to be powered off the chassis battery, for exit safety reasons (it's an RVIA standard). Is it the chassis batteries you are turning off? I'd leave those on - they should not discharge rapidly like the house batteries will. Should last 3 months, at least, unless something extra is wired to them and drawing constant power.

On our Storm: The ON/OFF step switch is accessible right inside near the floor by the door.
