On my Discovery the step lights inside & outside along with grab bar lights had been disconnected when I was going thru the entire wiring system.
What I discovered, no pun intended, is that the light on the steps outside was connected to the switch by the door that operated the outdoor patio light, the first interior cabin light in front of coach, and the step control switch.
I call it the step control switch as setting it in up the steps move in/out with door operation. down steps stay out always and if I remember correctly is than control by door operation magnet. Door closed light goes off. This is the same magnetic control the makes the steps go in/out with switch in up position.
Now the ignition key determines operation. If key is off the steps will only stay out if the switch by door is in the up position. If key is on the steps go in/out with door.
for me checking all this nothing worked properly and how I got it to work was mount a large magnet to the door in close proximity to the magnetic control inside the coach close to door/steps with 2 wires running up to switch.
for some reason this quit working without that large additional magnet. The porch light and first enterior light worked however the steps would not operate and outdoor light by steps stopped working.
That was my fix. Something you could easily test with a spare magnet placed by that magnetic detector. Its used to determine if door is open or closed. Be cautious as if it is your issue upon placing magnet there your steps will move and can casue injury.
Of course first step is always test your light bulbs
