Inverters for Dummies 2017 35K

I wish they had a book like they do for computers and everything else it seems. First, Do you have the inverter "ON" when hooked to Shore Power. Secondly, do you run the inverter, say on an 8 hour drive to help keep the refrigerator running or will the batterys support it? In her notes from the walk thru with "Speedy", she wrote down he said to keep the inverter off when hooked to shore power.

In some MH's yes maybe. Most run generator while under way. Hard to answer your question without knowing info about your MH. Create a signature and tell us.

Don't know who"her" is, but yes, off when hooked up to SP.

ah, yes and no.

Systems differ on different coaches and different years within the same model. And it depends on the inverter, OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) or replacement.
My 2005 Winnebago has a very small 300 watt inverter with a built-in AC transfer switch. If Shore power is available it runs the TV receptacles on shore power, and the inverter draws about 26 watts (2 amps) of standby power. No shore power and it automatically is ready to provide 110V to the TV's.
New Winnebagos have a inverter/converter which both charges the battery on Shore Power/Generator and (I think) auto switches to provide AC to some receptacles when shore power/ generator isn't available.
Many Winnie owners have replaced that old 300 watt inverter with other, higher power inverters, but most of the replacements don't have that ATS (Automatic Transfer Switch). These have to be turned on and off, and may only be wired to dedicated receptacles.
If you tell us about your coach/trailer etc, maybe a current or past owner can help you.

It will depend on your coach & what powers what appliances/electronics. On our Bounder, we have to have the inverter on, even when hooked to shore power, because it powers both our TV's. Our fridge is 110v or propane, meaning it's not powered by the inverter. It's on 110v electric when we're hooked to shore power or running the generator or it's on propane when not.

I am really confused now on the use of the inverter. Our 2016 33C is our first RV with residential refrigerator and an inverter and when we took the delivery walk through we were told that as long as the refrigerator was on, whether traveling or on shore power, to keep the inverter turned on. Is this right or wrong?

Your question is worded better than mine. I should have asked when do you use the inverter?

Assuming you have the standard inverter in the Bounder for 2016, the MS2000 (Magnum MS2000) then you can leave it on or off.
If you leave it off you have to remember to turn it on when disconnecting from shore power or turning the genset off. If you don't turn it on in those cases, well, then your refer will not continue to work after the 120v source is removed.
If left on, there is an auto transfer switch in the unit. When it senses 120v power it simply passes that power to the outlets downstream from the inverter. This could be from shore power or the genset. When it no longer senses 120v power and the inverter button is on it will automagically create power almost instantateously, so quickly, if you had a computer on that circuit it wold just continue running.
I would recommend leaving it on.

FWIW
I leave my inverter on all the time. The way I ensure my inverter is putting out AC power when I'm not connected to external power or running the generator is looking at the main TV. The LG TV in my coach has a red light on the front that glows with the TV off and AC power connected. If the TV has power so does the refrigerator. I don't know if the TV's in the 2017 coaches have a power supplied light.
On my 2016 coach the inverter supplies the entertainment systems and the refrigerator only.

I will add one comment re: leaving the inverter on 100%, Even when it is powering nothing, the inverter is on standby mode and drawing some juice from the battery. If you store or just leave the RV parked without a shore power connection it will suck your battery down pretty fast. You might want to add "Shut inverter off" to your storage checklist.

How about getting the electrical drawings from Fleetwood? Just email them with Fleetwood ID number. Find out the brand and model of your inverter then down load the manual. Then you can verify if your frig is actually connected to the inverter along with the entire inverter connection circuit- what else is connected to your inverter.

Good Luck!

On the newer boulders, you would need to run the inverter whenever you are not hooked to shore power or the gen is not running due to your residential fridge. That being said, I would shut it off when hooked to shore power or on gen. No need to keep it running. As others have said, if you are the forgetful type, just leave it on but I see know reason to do so when I can just flip it on when ready to travel. I don't have a residential fridge but if we don't need roof air going down the road, I use the inverter for tv. Cheaper than running the gen. I also flip on the inverter a few minutes before we are ready to unhook, that way my in motion satellite does not have to start searching all over again when we unplug.

The sat dish on mine is 12v so the inverter has no impact to it's power. If your tv/sat box (both 120v) is on maybe the dish goes into searching again because the tv is being turned off and then on again if the inverter is not on when you do the switch over?
