I don't have much to add, and this may be a wild goose chase, but on my 8.1 Chevy Vortec P32 motorhome (successor to the 454) there is a spin on power steering fluid filter in the bottom of the power steering fluid reservoir, if it is clogged it might explain what you reported. Also I have read clogs in the power steering return line from the hydrobooster are a common problem.
