New Starter for Onan 4K Generator

We have an 08 Fleetwood Jamboree 25G. When I try to fire up the Onan generator all I get is a clicking from the starter. The batteries are charged, tested the starter solenoid it's good. I'm at the point of replacing the starter motor.

Has anyone here ever replaced a generator starter motor on my model of MH? The biggest issue looks like it will be getting at the starter.

Thanks in advance.

I am changing one out on my coach later this week, hopefully (taking the coach into the shop to get a windshield replaced in the morning). Had an if it can go wrong it will trip just before Memorial day, I am now down to the generator starter (bendex free spinning 14 out of 15 attempts to start) and the windshield then I will have all the stuff that broke on the trip fixed.

Generator Starter

Has anyone out there ever had to have a Onan 4KYFA generator starter motor replaced on a Jamboree 25G? I'd like know what the approximate shop cost was for the job.

Right now I'm debating the aggravation cost of doing it myself versus shop cost of having it done.

I had it done at a Cummins dealer in Las Vegas. About $500 to remove the generator and $200 for a starter. I did it myself earlier using an aftermarket starter. It didn't last. The Onan one has a bad reputation too though.

You may be able to reach inside and get to the starter without removing it. If not then you may be able to remove the cover bolts and raise the cover to help make room.

I had a clicking noise trying to start my genny. Turned out to be a bad remote switch. If I used the switch on the gen or the one in the cab it worked fine. Good solid connection and no clicking. Hope that's the issue. Much easier and cheaper to replace.

Good luck and keep us "posted".
