Onan 5500 gen.

I had my 2017 Bounder 35K parked for a while due to construction at my house. Last week I changed oil in the Onan 5500 generator and I couldn't get it to fire up. Hit the prime etc and no dice. Sprayed some WD40 down the carb and boom it fired right up. But when put under load it'd just die. So I looked at forums and they all said if you don't fire the thing up every couple months the carb can varnish up and it won't take a load.

So I got a new carb on Amazon. Reviews were good.
I get the new carb on and it's the same issue. Idles okay, but studders and shutters when throttled up.

So I am guessing it could be something else?

Advise

Did you check the gas filter. I take them off and see if I can blow thru them. If not, replace.

Your RV Generator doesn't idle, it should run at a constant speed. The throttle will open more to maintain that speed as load is added.

Haven't checked the fuel filter yet. Doubt it's bad, low hours, but never know.

Yes sir.

I did research and figured out how to read code on this. It comes out to code 14. Simply that means the engine is running too fast. Could be a number of things.

What I think it is is twofold:
1. Bad gas. This gas was put in February and that gas was put on top of gas from October 2019.

2. My gas gauge is at 1/4 tank, perhaps a bit under. So the Gen could be doing what it's supposed to when the Motorhome has a 1/4 tank or under, not work. Who knew? I suppose that's another thing not in the owners manual.

So I may go get some gas this week and report back.

Actually I'm going to change the filter. When I do I'll just drop a hose into my lawn mower gas supply and test it out.

I have heard that. Sure seems like a pump like that would run years and years.

You would think, my fuel pump died on the way home on our last brand new motor home.
I went to napa bought one and installed in line kept tne old one attached and no other issues for 8 years.

Cool. Did you just get a generic unit?

I have thought of doing that and running a valve and separate line to gas up my lawn equipment.
