Pseudo Leather furniture covering shredding!!

2013 Storm 32BH Pseudo leather covering on captains chairs, dinette cushions, and anywhere else this covering was utilized is shredding. Contacted REV and was informed that they would have done something if unit is under 2 years old. All of the furniture is mfgd. by Flexsteel. Contacted them and was informed that the material utilized was per FW spec. Flexsteel was not taking responsibility. Fleetwood is not taking responsibility. According to Rev the shredding known as Hydrolysis has been experienced on other brands of motor homes as well, which doesn't help me. Anyone else experienced the same thing and besides using seat covers on the captain chairs, which I have done, what else have you done and what was the cost to recover? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the world of cheap sh.t Chinese vinyl.
Your best option would be to have them recovered using
"marine grade" vinyl, made in USA. Flexsteel has been
doing this to folks for a while, welcome to the club.

Bonded leather peeling has been a problem not just in the RV industry but the furniture business over all. I replace merchandise on a monthly basis for my customers. Dealt with one last week.

My coach is a 2014 which I purchased last August. We were peeling badly. I contacted Forest River and they were kind enough to sell me the Complete sewn covers for the Captains chairs, dinette and the pull out sofa for $700 (their cost).

You can do the re-cover yourself. You will need time. Pulling staples is a pain and you will find many. Captains chairs will most likely require a few hog rings and a hog ring set of pliers ($14 investment). My re-upholstry project took me about 6 hours of my time.

It's doable, just takes time a patients.

We had this problem with our couch and dinette. Both FW and Flexsteel would do nothing although they knew it was a problem. We replaced both as recovering with quality material was as expensive as buying new furniture. Replaced sofa with dual reclining Lazy Boy sofa.

Thanks all for your suggestions and support. I kinda knew that I was going to be left holding the bag as they say but nothing ventured, nothing gained. More than anything it just Pxxxes me off that an industry that's trying to entice folks to spend major bucks relies on inferior products and then does nothing in the form of customer support when it is a known issue created by them. My old MH had fabric coverings that lasted a whole lot longer than these. You could at least prevent fading, which they were subject to, by closing shades and limiting exposure to the sun. Oh well, so goes life as they say, whoever "they" is.

Having spent a few years in the marine industry and a fair amount of time down on the Chesapeake, I'm very familiar with marine grade stuff. I also remember when vendors would slap a "marine grade" label on stuff, increase the price by 30-40% when it was the same as stuff in other industries selling for much less. At least we have the internet to search for alternatives. Thanks again all.

It's all about $$. Flexsteel makes some fine stuff - I had real split-grain cowhide upholstery in my last coach. No vinyl or other synthetic at all. They also make some really cheap crap, whatever the RV builder wants to spend, and most of them only care until the 12 month warranty expires.

$100k or $150k sounds like a huge amount of money, but it really isn't a lot for a heavy duty vehicle with a furnished house on top and self-contained water & electric utilities inside. Heck, coaches that run $500k-$1.5M still don't get it perfect. I hate to defend an industry that pushes mediocre quality onto unsuspecting buyers, but at some point the customers have to accept part of the blame. Too many buyers value bling a lot more than quality materials and workmanship.

Flexsteel does build some great seating. However they fall to the manufacturers specs as to what fabrics they want used. In an effort to keep costs down they too often specify cheap fabric. Flexsteel just builds what they are contracted to make.

Ditto to denverh's problem and gripes. I have a 2012 Storm. Fleetwood blamed Flexsteel. Flexsteel blamed the fabric maker. When I asked Flexsteel why they accepted such crap from a supplier, they started blaming Fleetwood for specifying that material.
Had denverh contacted REV within the 2 year period, the "done something" would have been to replace the old cheap with a new cheap. I wish that I had the time to compile a list of "quality issues" that poster's have had with their RV's and publish it as a list of things to look for when buying a RV. Who looking at RV's would think that the nice, shiny upholstery on the furniture would flake off piece by piece within 2 or 3 years or that the cabinet doors will fall off because of the tiny screws used to attach them. How much more would it have cost to use 3/4" screws rather than 3/8"?

We also have peeling captain's chairs this year; it seemed to happen overnight. One day I noticed a "blister" on the driver's seat and seemingly the next DAY, the entire seat was a wrinkled, peeling mess. I'm trying to decide whether to have them reupholstered or just trade the RV "as is." (We all know they are going to stick it to us on a trade anyway. )

So far our dinette is holding up fine, and we had removed the Flexsteel sofa and replaced with La-z-boy years ago. So right now the only issue is the driver and passenger seats. It's really annoying because we took care of the RV and it has been in covered storage... no "sun damage" or any of those excuses for cheap materials failing.

Same problem on our driver and passenger seats. We have Villa seats and even though I told REV over phone before warranty was out I was told tough luck as person I told did not note it. Really PO’d me as I could have rushed up for them to see before warranty was out but since I was told no problem I just waited until appointment I had. They only fixed problems I had emailed in under warranty. Of course gal that called me when she got my email to confirm told me not to worry and any other problems would be taken care of at service. Nice to be lied to. Then I was told I must not have told anyone since they note it when on the phone. Don’t believe or trust them.

Well, that sucks, Tom. Our Bounder is 6 years old so I knew Fleetwood would advise me to pound sand and didn't bother contacting them. But I must say that if I had an American Coach only 2 years old I'd be pretty steamed over the poor quality seats.

It was about 2-3 weeks before the 12mo time when I talked to them and then about 14mo at the appointment. :(

Just letting folks have a heads up. Get things in writing to them!

Oh also sticker was $550k so it is not a lower end coach but around start of what fills start of luxury range.

My point, exactly. A lot of money for such a disappointing outcome.

Well after getting over the annoying part of my rant I decided to get busy and so something myself. The worst shredding pieces were on a decorative piece on top of the dinette couch section. Closest to the door it is about a 36" section covered with material abt 2" wide. After looking at it awhile it had 3 perpendicular strips running accross it. After prying one off I discovered a screw underneath which holds the section to the top of the dinette. Got it off and went to a marine fabric shop, told them what I was looking for and asked for any suggestions they might have. Turned out they gave me a piece of very good scrap from another job to try out. Told me to heat it with a hair dryer as I was stapling, that way it would shrink after installation to form a nice tight fit. So far the only thing it cost was gas to the shop and time to pull out all of the dxm staples. BTW in my research I did find the co that made the dinette cushions located in Johnstown,Pa. It is Page Foam Cushion Products and they have a website. They have a package deal for dinette cushions which includes two seats and two backs of 5" thick foam for $265. with a whole bunch of fabrics including leather to chose from. They also do custom sizes.
Without the time spent fixing the MH what else would I do in my retirement. Keeps me off the streets and outa the bars as my Dad used to say.
