Quality repair work!

A couple of weeks ago I bought a 1998 Fleetwood bounder 34V. The seller told me he'd had the starter motor on the Onan Marquis 5.5 genset replaced by a Cummins dealer fairly recently. However, the generator still made strange noises when starting, and sometimes wouldn't start.

Couple of days ago I tried to start it, and it jammed up. So, yesterday, I dropped the genny and removed the starter motor. It tested fine on the bench, and the generator was easy to turn over. I looked inside the gear housing, and found this....

Parts of the drive pinion of the old starter just left inside. Jeez.

Removed them, reassembled it, and it works fine.

How does a dealer just leave broken parts inside the generator???

Cummins dealers vary from downright ignorant best in class just like ever other company. They tend to be pretty good though. Their main problem is trying to sell a new unit or do unneeded extra work. It also could have been an RV mechanic who felt he/she was a Cummins repairer. You never know. Glad you could drop it and check it yourself though. Self reliance id a good thing with RV's.
