American Coach: Replacing Exterior ‘97 Eagle

Hello I have an 97’ Eagle that has extremely bad side wall delamination. The entire sides of the RV need to be removed it’s bad. Has anyone seen any one else attempt to do this? I want to redo the exterior in something other than fiberglass. So any suggestions would be Awesome.

Attached are some pictures of the sidewalls. Kind of hard to tell in the pics but the outside fiberglass is horribly delaminated.

A couple years ago I looked at a 1998 Bounder, 30ft. where the owner had the the delam removed then had metal skin put on it. Like the RV's of the past used to have. He also had the roof done using a single sheet of aluminium, no seams. I only recall him saying a RV repair shop did the work. It was nicely done and looked great. If I recall he said it set him back 6k. I passed on it because the interior was in sad shape. It was a project he couldn't finish.

You can strip it down to the metal frame and build whatever kind of sidewall you like, but it's a huge amount of work and expensive as well. Even when DIY. Aluminum sheet metal would be classy, but corrugated aluminum siding is probably less expensive. Or fiberglass sheet (filon) - it doesn't have to be laminated fiberglass walls.


Plus you need to fix whatever caused the delam to being with. Leaky roof seams?

Yes it looks like all of the water came in through the hundreds of rivets along the very top roof/wall seam. And yes I plan on having tons of extra work inside the walls to do once the skin is removed.

Take pictures and post if you are able once you do this. Great coach and worth the trouble in my opinion.

I think if it was may coach I would look into getting some resin down the same path the water took,have make sure it completly dry.I think i would try the smallest area.You would have to build some sort of clamping arrangement to make sure it is in place before it sets up.I also think it would be a mistake to try and cover the whole coach with another product.You could contact a marine repair complex and run it by them,I think that would be my approach.TKS
