If it is an Onan generator, my old one did something similar. The two switches inside wouldnt start the genny any more. They would shut it off, but not start it. The switch at the actual genny would start it. After some testing we determined that the switches were all fine, it was the circuit board in the genny that was shot. A new board was around 500 dollars, so I found a used generator instead as the old one had high hours on it. May not be your problem, but mine had similar symptoms. Did you actually test the switch.
