RV Satellite Questions

we have a 2014 Discovery 40X with a Wingard in Motion satellite dish. We have never subscribed to satellite service for any RV we have owned and I need some help.
1. do we need to get any other equipment than the dish that came with the RV?
2. any suggestions on a company to subscribe to? We would like to get a subscription for just 3 - 4 months of the year when we travel.
3. how difficult is it to use a satellite dish service?

any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, you need a compatible receiver from a satellite TV company like Dish or DIRECTV. find the owners manual for that satellite dish and get a list of compatible receivers. Then choose which company you want to subscribe to. Keep in mind that some in motion dish systems will not work in High Def with DIRECTV, and DIRECTV only offers High Def channels today. Dish Networks is a different story and their receivers might work better with your system.

If I recall correctly those in motion systems are either for Dish or Direct tv. So first thing you need is to figure out which it is. I have dish and use the pay as you go plan. You buy a month at a time and if you don’t need it for the. Ext month you just don’t pay the bill until you need it again.

I had a Discovery with an in motion antenna and was surprised how well it worked. Good for keeping the kids entertained. But as the other poster said, I don’t think it supports HD. Unless the previous owner left the receiver box inside, you’ll need to buy one of those. Like a Dish Wally.

If you’re not interested in watching the tv while moving, you might want to get something like a Wingard Pathway 2 antenna which you can find on Amazon. It comes with the Wally box and it’s a lot more flexible if you camp in wooded sites where a roof mount might be obscured from the sky (you need clear line of site to the satellites for the system to work). I just got another Pathway 2 as we just got back into RVing. Don’t worry, plenty of room on your discovery basement for the antenna.

Thanks for the help!

did some investigating and learned our Wingard is factory preset for DirectTV. There is an outlet, a switch to turn the satellite on / off and a place to connect a cable. I guess our next step is to find someone who knows what they are doing and get them to figure it out.

Thanks for your help. It got me going in the right direction and I better understand some of the comments on the Direct web site.

Again, thanks!

To get what you want I would switch to dish if possible. Direct does not allow just a few months use.

If you pull the dome off of the satellite dish assembly on the roof there is a set of DIP switches and a sticker showing how to set them for dish.

“Wally” receivers are reasonably priced and dish indeed allows use for only a few months of the year.

I have a 2016 40E and can talk with you about how all of this will work together. PM me with your phone number and we can talk if you want.

Also, it does support HD.
