I've had the steps not come out after the unit sat all winter long. Like someone said, if the light comes on then no fuse/breaker issue.

First time it happened, it was lubrication. These units are designed to stop when they hit a current limit (when the motor binds). If they aren't lubed properly, they bind and stop, sometimes without moving.

Second time, it was a probably a dead spot or corrosion on the armature of the motor. Took it apart, bench tested the motor, finally got it to spin, reassembled and it was fine.

Last time, the motor just ended itself, ordered new on on amazon. I have a post somewhere on here if you need the part number.

These things are a real PITA, nice to have but a pile of work when they stop.

Ditto, be careful when pulling the cotter pin and disconnecting the arm from the stairs...have it blocked up or someone you trust holding it; lots of pinch points and a bit of weight when they come loose.

Steps trying to work again

Thanks to everyone for your input. After buying two long screw drivers I was able to get the cotter Key out of the pin and the pin out. Now that I can get to the motor,I dropped it but the motor still would not work. I then pulled the four screws that hold the motor on the gear. Pulling the motor out about 0.25” I felt a pop. The motor is now working but the plastic gear is striped, so I will be replacing the assembly. Again thanks for all the suggestions and help.
