Windshield question '01 Southwind

Just noticed a crack in the upper left corner of the driver side of my windshield. It seems to have been from something hitting it like a rock or ??? My question is, have any of you ever tried fixing a windshield with the stuff/process that they use for windshield chips? I have a guy coming out Monday to look at ours to see if it is fixable or if it will need replacing. I can't imagine what a new piece of glass that size is going to cost. Any feedback here?

Hi Ray and Barb.

Normally, your insurance will cover a repair or replacement; if not, a crack usually will spread over time and eventually, must be replaced.

Unfortunately, I think our deductible is too high for any help. We have $1000 deductible. I know it will spread and it seems like it is going fairly fast. I didn't see it when we bought it and can't figure out how it happened. We haven't even had it out on the road yet. I drove it home, took it to a RV shop for the toad stuff and to a propane/dump station. That's all. It is stored where we live so it mystifies me as to how it could have happened. It had to have been there when we bought it and I just didn't notice it. Bummer!!!

If you have glass coverage usually it is separate form the deducible.

The big question is will the insurance company treat it as a incident and the next time your insurance renews will the rate go up?

Worth calling you agent and asking some questions before putting in a claim or not filing when you could have gotten it covered. Just be sure to ask the questions of someone that really knows and not someone speaking from a script.

In 2005 I had the driver's side windshield replaced. About $900 at the time. Insurance covered it without the normal deductible. You need to call your insurance company.

Since then I've had about four chips repaired and I did one repair myself with a kit. I won't do it myself again, it's the only one you can tell that it was repaired.

Thanks everybody, I did check my policy and the comprehensive is $500 deductible. I don't know if there is anything about glass. I'll check with AAA on Monday.

Glass is usually treated as a no fault claim, so your rates should not go up.

I had a 10 inch crack that was near the top of my windshield and did not obstruct any vision so I paid a glass guy $50 to stop the crack from spreading and it has been fine not spreading for over a year

Our ins policy has glass included so there is no cost. Yes check your policy or call your agent. We had a rock hit the windshield on my F150 I called my agent and within a hour I had a glass repair company call me, and it was repaired in my driveway the next day. NC and my ins didn't go up either.

I had a glass guy come out to the house yesterday. He informed me that my cracked windshield is not repairable because it is cracked through both plys of glass. If it had only been one, he could have fixed it. He said that the bonding process uses the good glass layer to bond the cracked layer to. So, he couldn't do anything about it until we get back. So, I guess we will just have to take our chances with a cracked windshield. He seemed to think that it might have been cracked in the installation process but I find that hard to believe but??????????????????/stranger things have happened. See ya all when we get back in two weeks.

It is very easy to crack a windshield when it is installed. It should have shown up immediately. The glass is a solid object. Any movement or pressure point will cause another crack. That's why they are mounted in rubber. We had one crack after driving into a somewhat rock and roll road into a CG. At first I did not hear or notice it but later on that afternoon one of my friends ask me how long the WS had been broken. I drove very slowly into the CG but somehow the frame must have twisted enough to cause the break. It looked like somebody hit it with a baseball bat.

Just wanted to say thanks to all for helping out. I will have to have it replaced when we get back from our trip. I'll keep you all posted as to how it goes and how much etc.
