Car hauler or tow vehicle?

With a 45’ coach and a 20-24’ car hauler, any restrictions? Is it better to pull a tow rig or use a car hauler?

Ok, regarding length and weight restrictions you will need to get numbers and advice from someone else on here. My two cents: It is a lot more weight to haul a trailer and a vehicle which impacts many things like fuel economy, drivability, GVWR, cargo capacity of the coach, etc. I pull my vehicle wheels down or what some call flat towed behind. I don't even notice it is there EXCEPT that i cannot back up. When I pull my utility trailer, I can back up with the trailer when necessary (fuel station, tight turns, dead end, etc.). If you tow a vehicle wheels down or flat towed, you cannot backup without unhooking the tow vehicle. I have not had any significant problems but I do have to be very careful where I go forward so I know I can get out also going forward! Just a couple of things for you to consider.

Bear in mind that a lot of CG's will not have room, nor will they allow car hauler trailers to be kept on the sites.

I tow four down. We have it down to a science and hooking up takes less then 15 minutes. Unhooking is even faster.

If you plan ahead backing up with a toad will not be necessary. In 12 years I've had to unhook only once to back up.

From the towing point of view we prefer the trailer hands down. Easy to manieuver, you can back up etc.

From the loading and storing point of view the four down method is quicker.

If you are towing an electric car then yiu’ll Have no choice as it will have to be on a car hauler.

Cheers.

Thank you. The car trailer I am considering weights about 3400 and the car would be another 5000 or so and even with other misc. stuff in the trailer it would be about 10-11000 total. Far less than the 20000 allowed by manufacturer. Is there something I am missing that I should consider? I agree with your points and also the trailer will allow for other items to carry on the trip. Thanks

If you can have a hitch on the car so you can move the trailer around when not attached to the Moho.

Curious. What kind of car. Tesla model X? Just had a buddy go thru this with his model X.

If you are going into the woods or forest or on BLM land with open space to park a trailer is fine. If you are trying to go to an RV park or campground with single spaces, a trailer is a pain in the you know what. It can be done, just a hassle.

I am not sure what you are calling a tow rig or car hauler?

Advantages of trailer where vehicle is totally on it, are you can back up, carry more items then just a vehicle, and being able to take a vehicle that can not be towed 4 down.

Disadvantages are going to be places to put the trailer when stopping. May not be able to use some RV parks or places since they will not have room for the trailer. Trying to move the trailer into parking spots with the coach unless you have something to move the trailer around with.

Having a 45' coach already limits your RV spots that you can go just by itsel

I just went through this decision.

Choice was flat towing my F250, or a trailer hauling my wife's GLS450. The combined weight of the trailer and the GLS 450 was only slightly less than my F250, and I would have the hassle of storing the trailer and dealing with it at my destinations.

Flat towing the F250 was the obvious answer. Plus the bed of my F250 is extra storage, and the Thule/Yakima compatible rails on my Retrax Pro let me use the truck to haul bikes and kayaks.

Having said all that, I already owned the F250. If I had not, I probably would have bought a dedicated toad. Probably a Jeep.
