Cummins updates?

Curious if anyone has visited Cummins and found they "needed" firmware/computer updates?

When I had my previous 2013 Allegro Bus, I had to visit Cummins while on the road in 2016 for what I thought was a possible DEF/derate issue (that went away as soon as I cycled everything), While getting checked out, the Cummins tech said I needed a large number of updates to the software. Spent a good couple of hours downloading updating. He said it could have been the problem I experienced since many parameters around the fuel supply/rails changed. That was the ISL as I recall.

Now that I have a 2014 with an ISX I was wondering about updates and if I should have it checked out or how I would even know if there are any urgent ones out there that should be addressed.

Thanks

Tom

I had my coach in the Cumming shop in late 2018 I don't' think they did any updates at that time but I could be wrong. I just tired to go to Cummins Quickserve but it is not likening me at the moment.

I was able to get in Quickserve and found that I have a campaign and a TRP for my engine. The campaign is for the catalyst, based on the part # I have installed determines if I need a new one and a ECM reflash.

I had it done. I went first morning at 7 AM they had to remove the catalyst and see if it was of the ones that needed to be replaced. Turned out I had one of the bad ones. They said they found one in Dallas and would take a day or two to get there. Made appointment for following week. Left Cummins Houston around 9 AM.

Got there at 7 am and they finished around 2 PM. I don't know how heavy the catalyst is but I tried (not very hard) to pick up 1 side and it did not move. They also did all of the updates to the ECM.

It will be interesting since I use to see yellow emission message for a minute or so every once in a while if I will see that again.

Good deal. I left Cummins yesterday in Toledo after a week getting my CAC fixed. I discussed doing the catalyst update but needed to get on the road.

My plan once back in Houston later in August was to sync up with Cummins there to see if I need mine replaced. I noticed on the campaign i have till later part of October before it expires so clock is ticking.

FWIW, after having the CAC fixed and seeing good turbo boost now, plus they did a complete regen cleaning to ensure no errors, over 300 miles yesterday I only saw the emissions like 2 times very briefly. Perhaps some improvement there but likely because of the regen.

I take it that Cummins had no idea about emission message?

I did ask the service manager there about the yellow "EMISSIONS" message in regards to regen and the campaign. He said pretty much what MOT Told me if it only stays on a couple of minutes or so, its normal function. I was a big confused because I swore he said something to effect "its doing its regen cleaning" but I know regens (for my experience) have always taken like 45-60 min with they are invoked. Perhaps this is "mini" regen or part of engine self maintenance so full regens are not needed.

I am interested in hearing your experience after the change/update

Never saw them on the 450 Cummins on my Tiffin, but then there was no silverleaf monitor so could have come and gone and I didnt know it.

I also mentioned that the ISX15 600 seems to go through DEF a lot faster than the ISL 450 did. He just said bigger engine doing more work. hmmm...

One more update...after the CAC repair and driving over 1200 miles over the last 3 days I am seeing slightly better MPG ...perhaps a half or more on avg then I did for the 1500 miles of my drive over similar geography. Thinking the leak was there for while the cooler just fully cracked over time. The repair looks real good. Being a welder in a past life for about 5 years (not TIG though) I was impressed. They did 3 passes over every corner top to bottom and several across the top.
