question on high mileage

i've been looking at a 2005 u295 40' foretravel. the coach is very clean,
it has 120,000 miles and 3300 hours on the power tech generator. the engine is a cummins 450 hp and most folks say the diesel engine will be fine if it has been serviced properly. 120,000 miles seems like a bunch and i'm a little leary on it and the hours on the genset. the coach sounds good and drives good. any suggestions and recommendations would be appreciated.

pawpawboyce, I have always been impressed with Foretravel Coaches. It would seem that they are made by only the best fabricators and if that coach is as clean as you say it is it should be a nice purchase for you.

120,000 miles since 2005 - - - why heck just probably got broken in!

pawpawboyce,
120K miles on a properly serviced and maintained diesel engine compares to about 25K on a similarly maintained gasoline engine.

Diesels are designed to operate well for 500K to a million miles ...IF they are properly maintained and serviced. So, if the engine has been taken care of, 120K would not be a significant issue for me.

Ask the owner to allow you to draw a sample of the crankcase oil to have it sent off for analysis. (Most any fleet service operation can give you the name of a testing company). The testing company will give you the details on how to pull the sample. From their analysis, they can tell you what metalic residue from which wear parts is in evidence. This procedure will tell you more than anything else about what is going on in that expensive engine.

Also, have a qualified diesel mechanic go over the engine and drivetrain... money well spent. Any hesitation by the seller on allowing you to do either of these due dilligence procedures is cause for concern. You are going to spend big bucks here, and you need to know all you can know.

I do not know about the PowerTech genset, but if it is a diesel, basically the same assumptions apply.
Best of luck,
Jim
