Gulfstream Class A motorhome market exit

Does anyone know why Gulfstream chose to exit the Class A motorhome market and just sell class C and travel trailers? I just recently inherited my parent 2007 37' Gulfstream Yellow Country Club 378 YFED and my wife and I greatly enjoy it and so did my parents for 13 years. they had some minor issues but overall it is a solid unit.

A lot of coach builders went belly up around 2007-2009. Some are gone for good, some got restructured and are building again, and some came back in name only purchased by bigger, more solvent companies that made it through the bust. Gulf stream appears to still be privately held, so it would seem that they fall in to the “restructured” category.

This should be a good thread for some history lessons if folks that know about the demise individual companies share their knowledge.

There is a new tend in RV's such as the motorhome types and that are smaller more fuel efficient sizes that also gets around easier..

I sold my 33 foot class A and moved down into a 25 foot class B+ BT Cruiser for this very same reason, I don't fulltime and saw no reason to drive a big RV while flat towing a toad so I can go do things outside of the campground, now my class B+ goes everywhere without towing a toad with better mpg..

Fyi. I bought a 2004 Gulfstream Independence new and have had both great experience with it as well as a great floorplan. We thought about getting a new one, but we can't find a floorplan that would be similar, or an improvement. Our back bedroom has so much room and big windows which we love. It's a V10 so I do own oil changes. I have added a steering stabilizer and Sumo Springs to improve handling.
I don't think Gulfstream stopped class A units because of not being good. My feeling is that they put more into them at the time, than they could support and just downsized like many companies around that period.

Responding to the original poster’s question of why GS might have chosen to exit the Class A market. In short, in the midst of a growth period Class A sales continue to show year-to-year declines in the mid-single digits. Here’s the latest rvia summary:

https://www.rvia.org/news-insights/f...ebruary-record

It’s not isolated to February either and previous summary reports show it’s a trend that’s been continuing for multiple years. In the report it’s interesting to see how Class B & C compare. And of course the runaway favorite... towables.

Hope this helps.

Huh? Gulf Stream stopped making class A Motorhomes around 2012. I don’t think the Shea family did that because of a decline in 2020-2021 sales.

I didn’t know that because I don’t own one. Since the question was new, I erroneously thought it was new news! I should have done some research before replying. The recent trend & decline in Class A’s does help to explain consolidation in legacy Class A brands like Tiffin (bought by Thor) and Newmar (bought by Winnebago). Both of those are coaches I have owned. I have a Newmar now.
