mbroer, first let me welcome you to iRV2.com. We are glad to have you join us here and look forward to reading of your experiences. It sounds like you have a Suburban brand water heater. You should be removing the anode rod a couple times a year to drain and remove any sediment accumulated in the tank. Depending on the water condition the anode is a sacrificial rod and the material deteriorate instead of the tank. The head is mild steel as is the center rod that hold the (I think) magnesium. Keep an eye on it and you should be fine.
