2002 Affinity Chassis Shunt

I’m performing a major electrical overhaul (solar, lithium batteries, new inverter, etc. I purchased 2 500 amp victron smart shunts. In looking at the electrical diagram in my manual, they both indicate 500 amp shunts. The victron 500 amp shunt size is similar to the factory house shunt, but the factory chassis shunt (2 8d batteries) is about twice the size of the victron and factory house shunt. Does anyone have any insight as to why the chassis shunt is so much larger? Is it really 500 amps?

2002 Affinity Chassis Shunt

Probably because of the starter current on chassis batteries diesel starter pulls lots of current.

Victron makes shunts in 500 1000 and 2000 amps i think id put one of the larger ones on chassis.

I completed a similar project on mine a while back. I noticed the chassis shunt and looked into the need for it. I believe it was part of the original Heart interface features. The Heart electronics were all gone when we bought ours, so the chassis shunt was not hooked to anything. I decided not to try to tie it in to the new setup so I unhooked it, cleaned the connections and put both lugs on one of the shunt posts.

I also disabled alternator charging of the lithium bank, as not needed and did not want to add a DC to DC box.

Also note the generator auto start won't work right with lithium so I removed that also.

I have all Victron as well, feel free to reach out with any questions. I have 600AH of LifeBlue and 2000 watts of Rich Solar panels.
