Jean and I really had no clue, going in, what we wanted or how big it needed to be. We had a firm eye on future FT travel, but the mental gymnastics of cramming everything we currently had into even a 45-foot rig was difficult.
What we did was walk a LOT of coaches. Old, new, it made no difference. We sat down on chairs, couches, and toilets; laid down on beds; stood in showers and next to kitchen counters, and basically "played house" to see what worked for us and what didn't.
It's all going to boil down to what you're comfortable with. We decided we could be comfortable in a 37-footer and no less. But even that was a guess. Buying our last coach first was always on our minds, and I hope we did that last month. Since we haven't had the chance to even take her out even once yet, the jury is definitely still out!

We started looking for a 36 but floor plan pushed us into the 40. Shower placement was a big issue and I love having the tag. I don't think I would like a longer coach than the 40 but we don't live in ours full time.

If you are going to live in it, I would go longer. And if you are looking for a 1999-2000 era coach, take a look at the 42-foot Affinity Bed and Breakfast. It has a great floorplan, and lots of storage. If you get the all-electric version, you get a much larger refrigerator, and the Cat C-12 is a great engine.

Each has his/her own needs and preferences.

Generally speaking, 40' is probably a sweet spot for the combination of (1) availability; (2) livability; and (3) maneuverability.
