Alternator issue

Evening All,

I have having an issue with my alternator charging correctly. Right now it only puts out between 11.4 and 12.1 volts. Now I have had the alternator rebuilt and checked again and it checks good. It is a 2824LC alternator.

That being said the alternator shop said that I should be seeing 12V to the alt on the small terminal. This voltage basically turns it on but I am not getting it when the ignition is in the run position. So what to do?

I have checked the wiring diagrams and it says I should have a 16g yel wire coming from ignition key but I do not. Well the wires I have coming off of alt at that point are 2 purple 16g wires. From there they go into a large wiring bundle that is hard to trace. It also says 34E which is a plug of some type located some where's on the coach.

Wiring diagrams are great but when they do not give you an idea of where things are located on the coach they are pretty much useless!!

So if anyone has any ideas please let me know. The wiring diagram that I have is attached. Thanks for your help.

If you could put the year of your coach in signature, it'll make all of us easier to know what coach you were talking about.

On my 00 intrigue there is a yellow wire controlled by ignition on alternator. I tend to believe there should be a yellow wire to your alternator too. Could it have happened that the wire was dropped to somewhere during the removal process?

The yellow wire is to close a relay while ignition is on so the alternator can outout 12v nominal power, and to open the relay to prevent 12v from back flow when ignitin is off. Why do i know this? A few years back I needed 12v in sync with ignition to power my backup camera. I discovered that only was the yellow wire available to me other than the emergency shutoff button.

Had the alternator ever worked since you owned the coach? I can't imagine without the yellow wire. To test your alternator mounted, while engine is running, supply the terminal the yellow wire should go to with 12v positive, have another person measure the battery voltage change. I bet it should charge. Good luck.

CountryFit,

Yes the yellow wire should provide 12v switched from the ignition to the alternator to turn it on. Right now it is not and the wiring diagram does not show a fuse or anything else in the circuit. I know there has to be something causing me not to get 12v switched to the alternator so what else could it be. Bad wiring, bad fuse, something else in the circuit that is not shown.

As for a temporary solution I may add a switch back around the alternator so that I can supply 12v to the alternator when I want to run the coach. But like I said it would be a temp solution till I find the real problem.

Thanks for your help.

I misunderstood you that you didn't have the yellow wire. Now I know you have the yellow wire in place but not powered when ignition is on...

There is a fuse box to the left of your left foot in front of the driver seat. Check that.

Interesting as my coach does not have a fuse panel up around the driver. Now I have 2 of them in the compartment below the drives area that has 2 20 fuse panels, labeled IP and CP. Not sure but have looked at the panels and did not see anything wrong with the fuses. Now I will run a meter over all of the fuses to see if any of them are damaged.

Again thanks for the help.

CAT or Cummins engine?

On my CAT C-10, the yellow wire to the alternator comes from the engine kill switch in the engine compartment.

Don't know what happens with a Cummins.

Mystery solved. I found a 7.5 amp fuse blown on the IP panel in the left hand front compartment on my Allure. It was labeled backup monitor, alt/ignition and reverse signal. So now the million dollar question is why did it blow and when? I did replace the radio head unit and it has the ability to display the backup monitor while driving down the road. I wonder if this could cause the fuse to blow. Will have to check it out the next time I take it out for a spin. I just wish the wiring diagram would have shown the fuse as part of the circuit.

Glad to know you found it.

Remember I said earlier I was trying to get 12v from the alternator to power my backup camera? Funny two years later CC did put that wire there... Oh well, looks like I did it right.

Have fun and happy trails!
