beating a dead horse hear...but here I go! Wet golf cart are the way to go! Cost effective, Light for EZ handling (DIY'er), however, more connection to keep clean. You need to mate that with a three-stage charger (bulk, float, hold) for the charging cycle. You also have to understand your AH usage vs AH of the house batteries, if not you have no idea what you're doing...dead batteries in the AM! For longest life of these wet cells you only want to discharge to 50%, I'm told...but in my sailboat have discharged to 80% and have lasted 10 years. my 2 cents from living off the grid for 2 days at a time on a boat for the past 25 years. one mans food is another poison!

The NAPA 8D batteries are dual purpose batteries, not deep cycle.
About 500 50% cycles and you can lug them around again, while you change them.
6 volt GC2 batteries are good for 1000 50% cycles. Add 1 jumper to a pair and you have a big 12 volt battery.

I hope you are still following this. Just noticed you ask "Does the inverter need to be on"
Multiple answers
On my main inverter there are 3 ON/OFF switches (well techincall two are ON/Standby)
The main ON/OFF must be on, and the charge switch The Inverter switch can be set to "Standby".
ON some IT does not mattert
On others, the switches may be different..
Only ways to be sure
1: RTFM (read the fine manual)
2: Test, Hook a volt meter to the batteries and see what happens when you turn things on and off.
3: Post make and model (Pm me if you must) and I will RTFM.

Like I said I do not boon dock. My coach came with 8ds and they fit as tight as OJs glove in my slide out battery trays. Not even sure what I would need as far as charger goes to switch to 6v. if anything. If they last 500 50% cycles I'm probably good for about 20 years. I can still bench press 350lbs and can curl a 8d battery

Features & Benefits
Ideal For Heavy-Duty Cycling Applications w/ Long, Deep Discharges & Long, Slow Recharges. (Can Also Be Used For Starting.) High Density Plate Paste Delivers More Power & Lives Longer. Vibration Resistant Design Handles Demanding Marine Use.
I still think I'll give these a try, just too many options and this way I don't have to buy any jumpers. If it doesn't work out I'll give the GC2's a try.

I did RTM which in my mind was kinda vague but made a comment about the inverter switch being on, that is why I asked the question. My inverter switch is just on or off. I'll have to do the volt meter thing.
