BUZZZZZ went the GFI

I have a 2002 Intrigue and a while ago I noticed that it did not have a GFI. Apparently the previous owner had taken it out. So off I went to the local big box hardware store and got the appropriate sized GFI. Every time I turn on the inverter I get a buzzing noise from the GFI. I have a 2500 Xantrex inveter. I'm pretty sure it shouldn't buzz and have replaced the GFI and the same thing happens. Any suggestions outside of pulling the GFI out and installing a regular outlet. Thanks

Your inverter is probably a modified sine wave inverter, and perhaps the GFCI you bought doesn't like it. I suggest putting a GFCI breaker in the panel and putting the plain outlet back. The breaker panel GFCI breakers are much higher quality and perform better with fewer issues. I have several in my inverter panel and they work fine with my MSW inverter.

I talked to the folks at Xantrex about the buzz and the GFI and this is what they found:

"The GFCI's that tend to work with modified sine wave are usually made by either "Pass&Seymour" or "Hubbell/Bryant".

GFCI's made by "Leviton" tend to not work well with modified sine wave."

So next time around some place that sells them I will go looking for the first two.
