Carrying full water tank

In my three previous rigs I always traveled with full fresh water tanks and never had a problem. I figured the tanks are there for that purpose, and I boondocked a lot. However something I just read made me wonder. Can that much weight stress or possibly damage the rig's framework and construction? Worth considering I guess.

I always carry 1/3 to 1/2 tank of water. If you ever have a breakdown and have to truly dry camp for a few day you will know why.

I always travel with 3/4 to full tank. I have been to RV parks where the water has gone out and was glad that I had my own supply.

How much does water weigh? At roughly 8 pounds per gallon it's not much more than gasoline at 6 pounds. How much fresh water can you carry? I can carry 75 gallons at 600 pounds. I also carry 75 gallons of fuel or 450 pounds. I expect the chassis can handle that plus. The biggest restriction isn't the chassis framework but what the tires and suspension can handle. One thing you might notice is the heavier the coach is, especially if it is loaded correctly, and the lower most of the load is the better it will handle in wind. I travel with full water for this reason.

Fill both the fresh water and fuel tank and weigh your coach. Then you will know if you're ok.

We usually travel with full or nearly full fresh water. Just in case needed enroute.

We have a 100 gal fresh water system. That's 800 pounds if traveling. Significant in my view. We will normally travel with maybe a 1/4 or so and then fill up once at the campground in case needed. In 3 years its never been a problem. We also carry bottled water for drinking.

No way will 100 gallons of water plus 110 gallons for fuel going to damage a DynoMax chassis. Take a look at your placard in the medicine cabinet and check the weights.

Cargo Carrying Capacity (CCC) of my 2007 Allure is close to 10,000 lbs. 800 lbs of fresh water (100 gallon tank) is not a significant weight on the Dynomax chassis. Fully wet and loaded I weigh in at ~37,000 lbs on 45,000 lbs GVWR.

We usually have enough water to be able to use it during travel, it's actually not even a consideration for us when deciding as we always carry bottled water in the fridge.

NOW, I have heard of some mfg's that 'cheaped out' on support structure for the tanks and had tank issues... but those SHOULD be few and far between....

When doing normal traveling of non major mountain states, we travel with 3/4 + water.

When traveling in major mountain states/areas, like now in Colorado, we try to get down to 1/3 - 1/2 tank of water. When arriving in the park, one of the things we do while setting up is top off the water tank. A few days before leaving the park, we'll run off the tank until we're down to 1/3 - 1/2 tank level. (Have to sort of guesstimate that, based upon when the Half Full light goes out.)

When we get home. We also top off water and fuel, and empty tanks. Restock the dry and can foods, as well as the freezer. We keep our RV ready to go for either fires, earthquakes - and or the craziness of the world... It is our families emergency prep vehicle.

Now, after sharing all of that. I will say that if I had a bigger block engine then our ISL, we'd probably travel with full water even in the mountain states... But with out tag's added weight, the ISL is adequate in power to weight ratio, but not much in the way of reserve power. Hill decent with the 2 Stage Jake - serves us very well.

Best to all,
Smitty
