Coolant pump

OK mind got to wondering today...as it usually does

We lose the serpentine belt on the coach....no alternator..no probem start generator and travel we are charging

We lose the belt on the AC compressor...no problem...start generator use roof air to cool

Now i get to thinking what pumps the engine coolant through the radiator and block

Help me lose my fogged head

Thanks,

For the dash heat The bus pump. Found the 20 amp bus pump on my coach blown put in a new fuse and the seal started leaking badly. What a mess on my garage floor. Good a time as any to replace the coolent to the new type. Took the bus pump out of the loop with a bypass hose and put the burnt fuse back in. The dash heater works fine using only the engine water pump.doesn’t make sense to pay a few hundred dollars for a new pump and take a chance of getting stranded on the road for a pump that isn’t really needed. This would take care of the dash heat as far as the block cooling you will need to carry a spare pump and gasket as there is no other way around that one.

Hence my ignorance
What is a bus pump? Is that what pumps coolant.through the block and thus dash heat?
Where is it located?
Is it hydraulic? Electric?

Thanks

On my coach there are two circulation pumps one is near the forward position of the engine up high another is under the dash accessible from below. These pumps are called bus pumps (or just the first one, as opposed to the coolant pump on the engine). I bypassed the first bus pump years ago no evidence of ill effect.

You are correct that is it’s purpose. It is electric it operates when ever the engine is running in my case I knew I didn’t need it because the fuse was blown and I had heat. It is located in my coach on the driver side to the left of the transmission up high. The fuse was located in the fuse compartment under the driver seat . Pull the fuse drive your coach 5 miles or so and see if your heat works if it does you probably don’t need it. Just trying to back my coach out of the garage to bypass the damn thing the engine shut off due to low coolant. In my opinion one more thing to go wrong that could leave me stranded glad I don’t need to deal with it anymore.

The serpentine belt drives both the alternator and engine coolant pump. You won't be able to continue with a bus pump, unless it below zero out!

Every belt diagram I can find ; for an ISL ;shows the engine water pump and alternator driven by the same serpentine belt .
If the alternator stops producing power; but still turns ; you can run the genset and continue ; provided your coach has the equipment to charge the chassis batteries from generator and shore power and it's operational .

If the alternator , locks up and breaks the belt , that's a big problem .

Ok took another look at engine, what I thought was an idle pulley next to belt tensioner is the water pump

Now to hone up on the bus pump

And figure out a way to bypass AC compressor or alternator with a shorter serpentine...there goes my mind again

Thanks everyone

Can you post another photo , wider angle showing complete routing of belts and AC compressor and alternator .
Or is this your ISL set up ?

Air conditioning compressor drive belt can easily be removed , in the event of issues there.

But it's very doubtful you could find a shorter belt that the tensioner would hold tight and drive the water pump , without going around the alternator.

EDIT: I will give it some thought though , necessity is the mother of invention.

No way the bus pump will cool the engine. Consider the fact that the coolant filter has only about a 3/16” hole for the coolant too flow threw you will never move enough coolant with that kind of restriction.

Ok , there is a slim possibility that you could find a serpentine belt short enough to accomplish this.

With the current belt in place to hold the tensioner in position , where it's holding tension on the belt .
Grab a cloth tape measure out of your DW's sewing drawer ; promise her you won't get it dirty. Put a mark on the water pump pully where the lower red arrow is , start with the cloth tape there and go up around the air conditioning drive belt hub ; upper red arrow ; and lay the cloth tape onto the top of the serpentine belt then continue laying the tape the rest of the way around the crank pulley and the tensioner back to the mark on the water pump.
Now because you've been measuring the outside of the existing belt and replacement belts are measured inside this measurement will be a little longer than what you need , deduct 1/2" .
With that length and a count of the groves in the existing belt , see if any parts store can provide a belt .

Most brilliant
It would allow about 25 percent contact on the waterpump...perhaps enough to slowly get somewhere to facilitate repairs
Now to find Vicki's sewing kit bwaaahaahaa
