Dead Chassis Battery

I’ve been plugged in to shore power and my chassis battery has gone dead. The Magnum panel shows “floating charging”.

1. What would be draining this?
2. Shouldn’t the shore pwr keep this charged?

My CC Concept does not charge the chassis battery from shore power only from the alternator/ running the engine, battery charger or we have solar panels and it charges the chassis batteries. Also if you have self leveling air suspension that will drain your chassis battery.

The Magnum inverter charges the coach batteries , so they will be fully charged. Most coaches have an Amp L Start or other method of charging the chassis battery from the inverter. The chassis battery will have a few things connected drawing small amounts of current that will eventually discharge the battery. The ECU ,PCM , radio are a few examples of the source of the draw. Sometimes the draw is enough to kill a battery in a few weeks.

When I first got my coach it was plugged into shore power at home and in about 2 weeks my chassis battery was dead. I found out that my echo charger was also dead and both inline fuses were good, so I order the Magnum Combiner and that was 5 years ago still going strong. Country Coaches came with Xantrex echo chargers that charged the house then the chassis batteries and has a green light when working, Magnum is a better system.

I don’t know if Country Coach included a chassis battery charger (Echo, Magnum or otherwise) from the factory but it seems most have added such a device. I know some prefer the Magnum but I added the Xantrex Echo charger a few years ago and it’s worked perfectly.

If you haven’t tried it already try turning off the chassis battery at the rear run box to see if that eliminates the power drain. At least that would give you some clues where to look. Either way, adding a system to charge your chassis battery from the house charger is worthwhile.

You should have an Echo Charger or something similar to keep the chassis batteries charged while plugged into shore power. If an Echo Charger look for two inline fuses at the Echo Charger and make sure they are good.

I didn’t see where you posted the age of your batteries, type, quantity, or size. I was having a similar issue with my 2005 CC Affinity 770 and ended up being my chassis batteries were bad. I replaced them and all is working well now. My coach had two 8D chassis batteries and I replaced them with 3 group 31 Odyssey batteries, this gave me about a third more cranking amps and more reserve. Just an FYI if yours or bad. My 8D’s were just a little over 3 years old as best as I could tell from the manufacture date code. I would check both the batteries as well as the charging system, One other thing is if your batteries are standard type batteries other than deep cycle and have discharged completely they may not ever come back up to 100%. Most types of batteries cannot not handle a deep discharge. Good luck andI hope this helps to diagnose your problem.

The seller of our coach had to always keep a tender on the coach batteries. I dug into it and found the echo charger wired backwards from the factory. The wiring instructions are right on the front of it, the red goes to the house and the striped goes to the starting battery. My red was hooked to the start batteries and striped to the house. I now have a steady green light and the chassis batteries have remained fully charged. If you are wired correctly and have a flashing green light instead of the normal steady green light it usually means that the house voltage is below 12.7 volts.

Lots of stories on the inter web about these things being wired backwards from the factory.

Dan
