Dip stick will not retract

This is I think a Gillig chassis issue, but may apply to many CC models with the " control center" .My dip stuck is very long. Putting it back in the tube can sometimes take 30 min or more! The last 2 foot is hitting something and will not close fully no matter how I turn it. You just have to keep " stabbing " the stick, frustrating !! Anyone know what the problem/ fix is ? I know my coach is the 1998 concept with the Detroit 60 series engine and the control center was built jointly with CC and Gillig. It's nice to have the control box area without opening the engine doors, but the long dip stick is a problem. Also my oil reservoir tank does not work. I have yet to look into this problem. Any ideas?

You are not alone. I have the XCS chassis and I sometimes have to take a break while re-installing the the dipstick because I get so irritated with whatever it is hitting. You are correct, 30 minutes is about right. And no matter which way you turn it..same result.

Check the tip to see if it has sharp corners or edges

Usually you have length beyond the reading area so you could bend just the tip back to make it round.

You can also make it screw shaped...grab end with pliers and with another pliers about 1/2 inch from end twist a bit.

Next file or grind the tip to be round with no corners.

The tip is riding the edge and snags on a joint inside.

It may be spring steel like so heat just the tip with flame then bend back and make it rounded.

Grind it to a ball shape.

Only need to use about 3/16 inch max length.

Be carefull as it could snap.

After done test fit on a straw to make sure it fits.

Make sure it is not crackedcat the bend by smakking it on ground or hard surface.

You also nan add solder to male it smoother.

Be sure to check for smooth transition both ways so you do not have a hook that can catch on extraction.

Darstar,
What do you mean the oil reservoir tank does not work? We may have the same oil reservoir tank. I have to open a valve downstream from the pump in line with the oil tank, turn the pump on, and it pumps oil into the crankcase. Which part does not work?

I was talking too soon. I personally have not checked out what the mechanic said when I bought the coach 2 weeks ago. He may have said the motor was dead. I will investigate this week, including drawings if I can find them in all the piles of papers. My big problem is the dip stick.
