Fridge Not Working

Just bought used 2005 Country coach 330 Inspire. 40 ft, pusher Cat 400hp
Our refridge isn't working. The 2012 recall was done by previous owner.
The local guy says $2500 to repair. Anyone have any tips?
We're getting ready to make our first trip. I can live without the fridge but reading online it says it could cause a fire!!!
Thanks, Bob 707 349-2310

What kind of fridge?

Some folks are replacing the gas absorption units with electric refers.

Norcold seems to be the one most are concerned about.

Do a quick search of IRV2 for refer topics. Lots of info here.

If it is a Dometic gas/electric refer it needs 120VAC, 12VDC, and propane. It will either work on 120VAC or gas automatically switching as necessary. You need to check for the presence of 12VDC(control voltage) and one or both of the others. Absorbation refers take 12 to 24 hours to cool. So how do you know it is n0t working?

Really do need a bit more info to help.

1. Is it a Norcold?
2. Was it working when you checked the coach before you bought it?
3. Have you tried it on both gas (LP) and on electric? Do all the other 12 volt things work in the coach? (need 12v to the refer controls).

You say you have been quoted $2,500 to repair it so it sounds like you have had a tech look at it. What did they say was wrong with it?

I would not spend $2,500 on any absorption fridge and would replace it with a residential fridge.

I'm replacing my Norcold as we speak with a Samsung. I also have a 2005 cc inspire. My Norcold was working but with all the fire issues I have decided to change to a residential refrigerator. My new frig is costing me $1000. I'm self installing.

We have had two of the recall boxes go bad. Sometimes they can be reset by a tech other times they require replacement of the recall box. They need to recall the recall box!

Bob
As stated ditch the Not-So-Cold and install a Samsung. This is not my coach but the install is the same and looks the same.
Samsung Refrigerator Install
My install ran around $1700 parts and labor.

I agree with Don what do you mean it's not working? Does it come on when you push the power button? Or is it not getting cold? It could be a easy fix.

We just installed the samsung and love it. I think you would be crazy to spend $2500 on that norcold when you could install the samsung for about $1300

Norcold-not cold!

Thanks for your response. The people we bought it from said it quit cooling. We can't even get it to start! Yes, tried electric, propane, nothing! We were told at the RV repair place the refrigerator can't be taken out of the Inspire! I'd love a Samsung! I saw an RV on fire along the road and now I'm terrified!

Where did you get the Samsung? Who installed it?
My husband is a knowledgeable mechanic, good with electrical and has been testing all he can to find the problem.
Thanks to all who responded.

Norcold Replacement

The Norcold in your 2005 Inspire CAN be replaced with the Samsung RF18HFENBSR I'm in the process of replacing mine right now. The removal is quite easy, I have pics that I can send to you if you would like.

There should be a small black box attached to one of the cooling coils. If a red light is on the unit has been shut off. This is the safety recall box that was added.
I bought my Samsung at Home Depot $997 plus tax. free delivery and free old refrig haul away.

It can't cause a fire if unplugged from 120V and 12V fuse pulled.
