Fuel Gauge
My fuel gauge has be acting up, showing full, for a couple years now off and on. I have been able to clean the wires and terminal on the gauge and get it working for a trip or two, but then it goes back to showing full again. Now it shows a realistic reading after it has sat over night when you first turn the key on. After the key is on for a while, 1 - 20 minutes, it goes to reading full again.
There is a resistor, I assume it's a resistor, between the power and sensor terminals of the fuel gauge. Does anyone know the value of the resistor? Do you think that resistor could be my problem?
The sending unit on my tank is toward the passenger side of the fuel tank and I have no access to get to that sending unit from the passenger side. I will have to remove the generator, which I have done before, and try to reach across to get to the sending unit. Not sure my arms are that long. Does anyone know for sure if that sending unit will come out without lowering the tank (2003 Intrigue 1st Ave 36 ft)? I read where other people have a panel that can be removed on the passenger side to access the sending unit, but my unit doesn't. I believe my lower compartments are arranged different than some. In the passengers side front compartment I have the propane tank, charger/converter and 2 - 8D batteries one above the other.
Has anyone had success or failure installing one of these Holley floatless laser sending units in a Country Coach? Holly #19-250-1

Hope that link works!!
Thanks,

Byron,
I think our coach configuration is the same - and here is how I accessed the top of our tank in order to install new fuel lines for the generator and Hurricane. In the first bay aft of the battery/propane/inverter bay, I cut an fuel tank access hole by using a hole saw. TR4 (Bill) did the same thing and I copied his method.
After drilling the holes, I then cut the top and sides to have a clean edge and then covered it with a homemade panel.
I hope you are able to find out what is causing the fuel gauge issue!

I have considered the same repair (Holley laser sender) and called Holley tech line to discuss. You may have to swap your gauge also to make it work. They tech guy also said on of their conventional floats could also solve the issue, and should work with the current gauge in the dash. You have to measure the height of the tank and order the correct float by length.
I have an '01 Intrigue (40') and have not tackled this project yet, but it needs to be done. Pretty sure the tank will need to be dropped to get conventional float into place. The laser model does look promising though. Please let us know if you do this upgrade, fuel gauge issues are a problem for ALL of these Coaches and a GOOD repair is hard to come by so far.

I had the same issue with our fuel gauge, pegged needle at full, found that it was a bad original sending unit. I replaced sending unit with Holley Easy Level and so far works great.

Glass Man - Could you please tell us what coach you installed the Holley sending unit and how you accessed the sending unit.
Thanks,
Byron

Yes, I have a 98 Intrigue Galley's Open 36 ' 10687 , 350 Cummins. I have about 9" of access in my propane tank bay, above the propane tank. I was able to remove old float sending unit and install new east level, I did have to run 12V power to the new sender.
Sorry new to posting, have not figured out how to load my info ?

Did you have to swap out the gauge in the dash? I called the Holley tech line and spoke with technician (VERY NICE) and he was not sure if it would work with our gauge or not. He did tell me that one of their other style floats would work however, but I still like the thought of using the laser sender.

How does our current gage work? Resistance measure in ohms? If so perhaps a transmitter or converter could be used.

Fuel gauge
dfuelman
Sorry been out RVing, on our 98 Intrigue I made the change to easy level and did not need to change the original gauge, it works well. However on our last trip I did experience the needle fall to all most empty and back to current fuel level ??, don't know why, but it always appears to be correct.

Not to derail your post in anyway. On my 06 magna i changed the sending unit in the tank with a "factory replacement"? that came from premier of Oregon. It went from being inoperative to intermittent. I works about 50% of the time? I don't have faith in it. I wonder if there could be a ground issue behind the dash because the speedometer is also intmentant and sporadic? I looked at the diagrams but could not determine what to look for. thanks, dale

Fixed?
I am the OP.
Just a follow up, I believe I have the fuel gauge working correctly now. I have taken two trips, just under a 1000 miles between the two trips and the gauge has not acted up since the last fix. The fix was replacing the 80 ohm resistor that goes between two posts on the gauge. Apparently the old resistor was changing value after being on for some time. The gauge would typically read correct at start up for a few minutes before showing beyond full and sometimes it would read correct a few hours before going beyond full.
I sure hope it continues to work properly as I don't look forward to replacing the fuel sending you.

I did not take any pictures. I am not certain where I got the information on the resistor, it was either on the old resistor or I found it on the electrical drawings in the manual and I measured the resistance. I purchased the resistor on Amazon, it is listed as an 82 ohm resistor. The amount of resistance affects the calibration of the gauge. Apparently my old resistor was changing resistance as I drove.
