Gas Gauge or Sending Unit?

2000 36 foot Intrigue. 101K miles

After sitting for a month, my gas gauge read well to the right of full. Typically, if I remember correctly, it would go to empty turned off and never to the right of full turned on.

After about 40 miles and 3 night stop plugged in it had not changed. After about 30 more miles, and 4 more nights plugged in, it appeared to read normal, slightly less then full. 70 more miles, it dropped to 3/4 tank and again looked normal. I had driven 140 miles total. I filled up with 35 gallons when it was about 3/4 tank, which I guessed should have taken about 25 at that level. I accessed the gas gage from the top and looked for a loose wire but everything was fine.

If it is the sending unit, can I change that without dropping the tank? I see I access it from over the propane tank. Is there a unique part for a gas gage or would any that fits the hole work?

Thanks
Jim

(I believe) (Most) gages would read (EMPTY/ below) w/ broken wire to transmitter and show FULL if grounded, so sounds like transmitter internal to tank is the issue; not sure how many choices you would have, and (many, VARIES W/ AGE/ MFR) are attached to the fuel pump mount, so all comes out at once?. Would be nice if floor access panel without dropping tank, but someone else will have to determine if existing, or if you could cut one? I would be looking for an existing panel w/ fingers crossed?

mine just had a 1/2 tube running straight down and i was able to pull it up and out for replacement. My coach is an 08 so i can not confirm what you may have. None of the gauges i have had in motor homes have been that accurate so if it were me i would keep an eye out on your mileage and see how it behaves. When mine went bad it had almost a full tank and as i left the park we were in i watched the gauge fall down to about a quarter then it moved back up a while later.

Pull wire off the tank. I should got to full, if not bad guage
Ground wire to tank, it should go to empty, if not bad sending unit
Simple

I had to replace my sending unit on my 2000. It is very tight, but you can do it without dropping the tank. Hiring a neighborhood kid would be smart.
