Hydro-Hot Concern

Hydro-Hot HHE-200-09E 12V
Diesel Burner Switch is On
City Water

As the Phoenix mornings became a little chilly, we noticed that the heat seemed
to take its time heating up. The hot water shower took a very long time heating up and the pressure was not what it used to be. The water on the two sinks where also the same as the shower.

Since it had been about 8 months since the last Hydro-Hot service, We had a authorized Hydro-Hot repair person perform a service. The only big finds where the chamber had more soot than it should and they adjusted the pressure from 135 to 145.

Since the service the heat is better however, the hot water remains a issue.

Thanks in advance.

Calcification (scale) on the inside of the domestic water coils from hard water can prevent effective heat transfer. This can build up over time.

Secondly the tempering valve operation can be compromised by scale build up. Turning the valve handle on the tempering valve to both ends of its travel will help remove buildup and help maintain its operation. NOTE: remember to mark/note where the tempering valve is set at before turning, to make sure you put it back to a similar position (i.e. turns from clockwise, for example).

I have flushed out my domestic water coil by circulating a mixture of vinegar and water through the coil. I used a 5 gallon bucket with submersible pump and tied short sections of garden hose from the pump discharge to the inlet of the coil and from the outlet of the coil back into the bucket.

Let me know if you would like me to elaborate or post some pictures on the coil/tempering valve de-scale flush.

I have the Aquahot 450-DE1, which is the same as the HHE-200-09E. Uses the same manuals located here.

Hope this helps,
Brian

I read on your propane cooktop thread you are contemplating a complete changeout of your hydrohot (Aquahot) for $8500?

I am surprised and thinking there must be a way to get your old one working better, at least with replacement of parts, etc.

Roger Berke (RV Hydronic Heater Repair) is a great resource. A number of us have joined his forum.

Headed to Carrier in Junction City, for a replacement of the Hydro-Hot system ($8200). The surge tank is completely empty. Changed the mixing valve and than developed a Glycol leak, tried JB Weld and that didn't work. Currently in Salome AZ, broken down with a HWH issue.

OUCH!

Rebuilt Aqua Hot Heaters/Tanks

A call to John Carrillo could be worth the time... Review what you have, and see if he has a rebuilt unit that might save you some money...

Best of luck to you!

I have talked to him and he recommended either a new one or a re-built. The new one will be at Carrier when I arrive. A rebuilt takes almost 3 weeks and cost about $3K less. Figure on some hotel time at a cost. I will be more diligent in the future, since I now know things that should and shouldn't be done. Thanks for all the kind words. We will never know what the "root cause" was. Sorry, just had to use that since you had used the same term in a earlier post. I worked for IBM and they used it all the time. The good news is we are leaving Salome, AZ today.

Carrier has a good reputation. While their, suggest you pop in just down the street and check out Oregon Motor Coach too. Matt and Elaine (The new owners who bought the business from the Lee's.) and Jim Cooley - are good people.

By the way, they too speak highly of Carrier's, and refer some work to them that they are set up to handle a bit better.

And if your in the region long enough, a stop in at WGO's Country Coach is always a good way to spend sometime, and perhaps some funds at the CC store!

Travel safe,
Smitty

Well our plan it too do just that. We picked Carrier because they are authorized Hydro-Hot dealer. The end of that week, we will have service done at OMC. Matt and Elaine where at the Rally in the Valley and we stopped and said hello. The following week we will be at CC for service items. Still looking for a glass person, maybe a factory tour. Since we have time to spend, might take a ride (car) to Bend. Thanks Smitty.
