Looking at a 98 Magna need input
So I've been looking for a CC 2000-2003 year Intrigue or higher model.
I ran across a 98 Magna 36' with the Detroit 40 Series 330hp 950fp tq.
Upon doing some reading on here I seen where someone said the front axles are almost to max capacity. Wondering if others find this to be true? Is this true for a certain length (Like 40' or 36')?
In another spot I read where the Detroit 40 was under powered for the rig. They didn't specify the length they were referring to. But did recommend to go with the Cat C10. Said that would be more then enough.
I'm only interested in this unit because the price seems to be good.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Mike

It is pretty solid coach, the engine is a little underpowered for the coach and I am not sure on the axle but many are near max weight. It is pretty common.
I believe that is a Gillig chassis so it will last forever but, like mine will be a bit of a dog.
Best advice drive several or don't be in a hurry.
The hills do bug me on my coach can be slow going sometimes

Our 38' Magna weighs 31,000 lbs and only has 850 ft/lbs of torque with the 300hp Cummins. We pull a 5,000 lb Jeep WK for a toad.
We have motored up every encountered highway hill successfully in the past 80,000 miles. Most of our travel is on the West Coast.
Yes, our front axle on the Gillig Chassis is close to max capacity when loaded for travel by us.
Your needs may be different than ours.

Isn't a C10 rated for between 335-350hp? Is 5-20 hp really gonna matter? I really don't know.
$hitty internet sitting here a Daytona Beach and can't add pics but my place card says my front axel Max is 13,200 I weighed mine allready to go and front weighs 10,600.
We pull a 4door wrangler and we are getting very close to 10mpg. If the engine is holding you back I believe it's a non issue. They didn't nick name it "The Legend" for nothing. Lol
The Gillig chassis is also a real bus chassis
If their is anything specific I can answer let me know and I'll try.

Thanks to all for the input.
How can I tell if its the Gillig chassis? From what I've read 98 was the first year of there Dynomax chassis and the 98 could have either one in it.
I'm headed out this morning to look at it and drive it.
Thanks again

On my '09 Magna it drives the hydraulic pump. Mine came from the factory with the wet PTO.

I called and spoke to someone at Kensington RV the other day regarding the wet PTO on a 2002 Intrigue, which wasn’t done; they said no worries on that one.

From what I've read in the last year or so. The PTO stuff didn't come into play until late 03 maybe 04. That's why I was looking at 2000-2003. But I wanted to ask, because I could be wrong.
I went and looked at this 98 and it has more problems then we want to take on.
It was the first Motorhome I've driven. I have driven Semi's in the past. The motorhome got off the line great but definitely lagged in power at 55-60mph and it's not loaded yet.
It had the Dynomax chassis and rode very well.
Thanks for all the help and input.
