New AM kwikee step motor, not working?

I just removed the outside step motor and gear housing to my 2006 Intrigue because it stopped working a week ago! Before I put in the new one (see picture below), I decided to test it by hooking it up to the wire harness and then closing the door and turning on the ignition. I expected the gear on the this little motor to turn a little, but nothing happened!

I did hear the normal hum of electricity going to the controller (see second picture) but that's about it. Am I testing it right? If so, could it be the controller box that is out?

I need to fix this thing ASAP as it is going onto several sites next week for someone else to own!

Was it grounded if not mounted?

I didn't even think about that. No, it was no grounded or mounted it was just free. I will try that tomorrow. Do you think it will make a difference?

Kwikee step troubleshooting is very thorough.

It shouldn't need to be grounded. The power and return occurs thru the 2 wire pigtail that is connected to the motor.

Thanks for the troubleshooting link. The instructions say that the steps will not operate without a good ground connection. But then again, isn't it being grounded already at the control box? I will just put the assembly back together tomorrow and see if it works!

04 Allure step history info with me...

1) First issue was inconsistent operation In/Out. Resolved for about 18 months, by disconnecting and removing the motor. Testing it by itself (ALL GOOD), and then putting it back into place. (ASSUME, my dismounting/remounting cleansed up contacts that had some problems!)

2) After about 18 months, inconsistent behavior. From both Out/In operations. Removed the motor again, and this time I too saw sporadic behavior in a motor. (3-4 times out of 10 - it would not respond to power, with out 'tapping' the motor with a handle from a screwdriver!). So, replaced the motor...

Best of luck to you on your issue!!!

The ground is provided by the green wire that comes off the controller

Take a good look at the DC connection to your battery bank from the steps. On my Georgetown I had trouble with the steps fully retracting without help, but they work fine with the engine running. My alternator powers the house up to 14 volts when running and a corroded lug was preventing high current from flowing without a voltage boost. Cleaned it up and all is well. These motors draw a lot of current when retracting the steps.

I put it all back together, and it still does not work! Now what? I really don't like doing electrical testing but I will take any advice you have. All the shops around here are booked up for quite a while.

My steps acted up a few months ago, stuck in the open position. Ran through the trouble shooting steps one by one. Mine turned out to be the cheapest thing to fix--the magnetic contact switch was bad. Ordered two from Amazon, installed one and threw one in the spare parts drawer for next time. Lubed the step up good and put some fresh paint the the metal cover and back in business!

The wires behind the mentioned magnetic switch can get pinched an break too... So check the wires running to the door magnetic switch.

Fingers crossed it will be something simple, and that you will have a new motor on the steps. And an old motor in your spare parts bin!

I have no idea where this magnetic switch is! I looked at the inside of the door frame and all I found was this, (pictures below). Those frayed wires have been there since I bought the Coach over two years ago. I don't think that is the problem, although more of them may have broken since then.

How would I remove and replace both if in fact, they are the problem?
