No house power with generator

I started the generator to run the Power on the coach, and I hear a clicking noise in the back of the fuse box inside the coach. I have no power, either 110 or 12volt. I’m wondering does it have something to do with the power transfer switch as everything was working fine when plugged in to shore power. Is there something I need to check to make sure the transfer switch is working?

Transfer switch? Circuit breaker on generator? I have had both issues happen with no power from generator. Can you open transfer switch and test the two lines coming into the switch for power?

Assume you have checked the circuit breaker(s) on the generator. Don't think that would lead to your clicking noise.



Don't know if the clicking noise means the transfer switch is trying to work. Transfer switch failed on mine. It is a Todd Engineering transfer switch that has a timing board that can fail. The timing circuit failed and wouldn't trigger the relays to switch. There is an LED on the circuit board that turns on when the circuit has timed out. You can start the generator, after checking its circuit breakers, and see if the LED comes on. It can take up to a minute for the timing circuit to complete its sequence.



If the timing circuit doesn't work and if you can solder and find a $1 or $2 capacitor the board can be repaired easily after you take it out. Once the board is out and the soldering iron is hot the fix takes about a minute to remove and replace the capacitor.

You said it was working when on shore power... my guess is the issue isn't on ats, but on genset. There is a voltage regulator on genset which is prone to failure. If the voltage is higher than the threshold of 129v (or 130v check the manual), ats will test and turn it off. That was the clicking sound you heard

Remove the cover and measure the voltage on output terminals of the genset. Good luck.

Yes, 120 VAC, through your converter or inverter/charger will charge the batteries, but to have lost 12 VDC at the same time may mean the batteries are dead.


SO, check voltage at the house battery bank and let us know what it is.


And, like others said, turn the breakers on the generator OFF and back ON.



If that doesn't do it, check for voltage IN and OUT of the ATS (if you are safe working around 120/240 VAC).

For the 12V, you might check your GFI.
It may have tripped

Thanks for your advice, when I go over to the Coach today I will check the breakers on the generator. It is a Power Tech . . I will look around to find the breakers. I checked the GFI, that is not it.

If you don't have one already you might think about getting a non-contact voltage tester, something like the one below. That makes it easy and safe(r) to check for voltage in lines. For instance if you have voltage on the 'in' side of the transfer switch but not on the 'out' side then you've found the problem. So keep that in mind when using one of these.

Note that these basically only give a yes/no answer, they don't tell you how much voltage is in the line. I've been caught by that before when testing a line trying to figure out why nothing was running. The tester said there was voltage in the line. Eventually I got out a 'real' tester and found out that there wasn't ENOUGH power in the line, it was down in the 90 volt range. It turned out that *I* didn't have a problem, there was a fault in the power transmission that was causing a brown out scenario.

If battery bank is disconnected and shore power is removed, 12 volts will go out. If generator does not restore 120 volt power, 12 volts will stay out.
